Using QB DeskTop 2022 pro plus in multi-user mode using windows 11

I now know that windows 11 and QB have issues.  And if you want to be in multi-user mode, it can happen but won't last long and you have to do multiple things to get it back, each and every time.  And that is with my 2 computers ethernetted together.  And I just got QB 2022 in October, but didn't download into my computer because my mother got very ill and I was traveling back and forth from Iowa to Ohio in Oct., Nov., and Dec which is the month I lost her. And when I was convinced to get 2022, I told them I wanted to use in multi-user mode and was told no problems.  And I said I had a brand new desktop, which of course came with windows 11, and no one told me I was going to have this problem. Then I jumped through hoops with many and hours long (one day 6 hours) on the phone remotely, and twice when they escalated me to level 2 support did get it working and I was over the moon, and then lost it.  Finally on my last escalation when I said my host computer was operating on windows 11, and speaking with Vin, who was adorable, he said OH, even though I mentioned it on every single other phone call.  He was the one to be honest with me right from the beginning of our conversation. Then we worked on it together and we finally figured out (which he was going to give the information to his counterparts in support) how to get it going and how once lost (which is basically 15 minutes of idle time) to get it back.  But obviously, a real hassle.  It's my husbands computer that is the work station and you have to do a function on the host computer and then functions on the workstation to get it back and he is mad and doesn't want to have to do it. He's not on QB all day like I am and is off and on and doesn't want to deal.

So here is my question.  I found out asking online (but Vin didn't think I could do it) that I CAN go from windows 11 back to windows 10.  But I've also been informed about QB's online.  Will I have issues in multi-user mode if both computers are operating on windows 10?  Or should I go to online, which again, I don't even do my payroll on the quickbooks I have now, or most of the functions.  Someone else does my payroll and I like it, lol. I input data (transactions) and my husband creates invoices and estimates, but that's it.  I save on a flash drive and at tax time I just give my flash drive to my accountant.  So I don't know what the pros and cons of either would be.  And if it's online, can my husband be on it via his laptop and me at my desk, AT THE SAME TIME, and after saving what we input, can either of us see all that has been done that day?  

What to do??????

The following are some reasons for QuickBooks multi-user mode not working: 

  • QuickBooks is not installed on the server.
  • Possibly that the hosting settings are not properly configured.
  • Firewall or antivirus software is not allowing communication between user computers.
  • The database server is unable to open the company file.
  • Windows file permissions are not properly set.

 

For the multi-user, QuickBooks Desktop 2022 still supports this feature. You'll need an additional license for your accountant so that you both can work on the same file simultaneously. Also, QuickBooks Desktop offers a hosting service to allow your accountant to access the file remotely.

It would be better if you are using Win 10 for now to run QBD 2022. If you haven't posted any new transactions since upgrading your data from QBD 2021, you will have to reinstall QBD 2021 to run on Win 10 for a while. You may also consider running QBD 2022 concurrently to run dual posts for one month to monitor both. It will take more effort but lowers the risk of troubleshooting again like you have been doing lately.

I'm not sure if I'm understanding what you said.  I never had QBD 2021.  I went from QBD 2018 and was convinced to upgrade to 2022 by QB and promised muti user ability.  And here we are.  

So my workstation (the computer losing communication) is running on windows 10.

My host/server and 5 month old new computer came with windows 11 already installed. Both are HP All in One Desktops.  When Vin (level 2 tech support) and I spoke, it was windows 11 causing the problem. Vin was under the impression that I wouldn't be able to get windows 10 if I had 11.  I went online and asked if I can downgrade to windows 10 on the new computer, answers came back yes.  I will contact either the geek squad or HP to see how I get windows 10 on my new computer.  But my question to you is, if I now have windows 10 in both computers, and they are ethernetted together, then I should be able to use them in multi-user mode, correct??  My assumption is you aren't having problems with muti-user mode in windows 10.

And I should also ask, if I do get windows 10 on my new computer, and I believe I'm going to have to back up all my data and then have to install windows 10.  Then I'll have to reinstall QBD 2022 on that computer, right?  Will I have to reinstall on my computer that already has windows 10 and has QBD 2022 already on it?

I'd like to add some additional information about your situation.

 

For your initial concern, yes, it would be best to create a backup copy of your company file to prevent losing any data. Here's an article for the steps: Back up your QuickBooks Desktop company file

 

After the backup, you can downgrade back to Windows 10, which is the required operating system for QuickBooks Desktop 2022. You can check the details in this link: System requirements for QuickBooks Desktop 2022.

 

Once you have the required operating system, install the QuickBooks Desktop program and restore the backup copy. Then, follow the steps shared by my colleague TirzahC in setting up the multi-user mode.

 

As for the other computer, you can retain the set up if Windows 10 and QBDT 2022 are already installed. Just make sure they're working fine.

Sorry I thought you were using QBD 2021 Plus edition and upgraded to QBD 2022. 

You should be able to clean install Windows 10 with the Windows 11 OEM license key that the PC comes with - so should not have to buy another license or disc as you can make your own Windows 10 Install USB/CD using Windows 10 MCT or other sources. Then later you should be able to upgrade to Win 11 once QB Desktop 2022 supports it natively. When you clean install, you will also install all applications from scratch including QB.
