Let's figure out why you're not seeing the option to set up the new automated sales tax, as provided by my colleague, grissomfueloil.

Once signed in, let's go back to the Taxes menu. Let me share these steps and the screenshot for you:

  1. Go to the Taxes menu and then select Get started.
  2. You will see your company name and address here. If not, fill out the address blanks with your company's address and then Choose Next.
  3. Match your existing tax rates with the official state agency in one of two ways and then choose Next.
  4. Review the rates and when you're done, select Save.
  5. Select the X to close the window, or to view a demo of automated sales tax, select Continue.

Hi there, @grissomfueloil

Thanks for taking the time to reach out to the QuickBooks Community.

I was checking things on our back end to see if we have any current ongoing investigations for this matter, and I do not see any. With that said, would you care to share a screenshot of the error message? This way, I can take a deeper look into it and provide the best steps possible to resolve this concern.

I'll be sure to keep an eye out for your reply, and look forward to chatting with you soon. Take care!

Thank you for getting back to the Community, grissomfueloil.

You may encounter this error when you are still using the old sales tax since you migrated your data from QuickBooks Desktop to QBO. What we need to do is to set up your new automated sales tax. Here's how:

  1. Go to Taxes, the Sales tax
  2. Click on Use Automatic Sales Tax
  3. If you updated your business information in Settings, you will see your company name and address here. If not, fill out the address blanks with your company's address. Choose Next.
  4. Select Yes or No when asked if you must collect sales tax from customers outside of your state.
    • If you chose "yes," input another state where you collect sales tax in the "Select an agency" section, or use the dropdown to view all available cities and states. Repetition is required for each city, county, and state where sales must be collected.
  5. Choose Next. Click X to end the window or click Create invoice to begin.
When prompted, choose how frequently you file sales tax from the Filing frequency selection.
  6.  Select Next agency and repeat choosing the filing frequency for each site where you collect sales tax.
  7. Then Save.
