Scheduled Backups

Having a problem with Backups not running. We have two company files, I created a scheduled backup for each one of them, one at 3 AM and one at 4 AM. I entered my windows password and everything appears ok on the schedule data. But neither actually run. So I attempted to run a backup with the same settings except not on a schedule, just a live run. Both of them worked exactly as they were supposed to.

 

What could be some reasons the scheduled backups don't run while a live run with the same settings do run?

Hello there, @Deadwood Al. I've got information to share to help you run the scheduled backups on your desktop file.

 

To begin with, let's perform some troubleshooting steps to resolve this issue and get you back to your business seamlessly. Firstly, ensure that your QuickBooks Desktop file is up-to-date so that your data reflects the latest product improvements. Then, run the Quick Fix My Program tool from the QuickBooks Tools Hub to help fix common errors and missing options in the program. Here's how:

 

  1. Close QuickBooks.
  2. Download the most recent version (1.6.0.5) of the QuickBooks Tool Hub.
  3. Open the file you downloaded (QuickBooksToolHub.exe).
  4. Follow the on-screen steps to install and agree to the terms and conditions.
  5. When the installation finishes, double-click the icon on your Windows desktop to open the tool hub.
  6. In the QuickBooks Tool Hub, select Program Problems
  7. Select Quick Fix My Program.
  8. Start QuickBooks Desktop and open your data file.

In addition, these are the things we need to check and the possible reasons why the scheduled backups don't run:

 

  • File Name Too Long - having a Company file name that exceeds 65 characters can cause your backup to fail. This can also happen when the file name has a lot of spaces, underscores, and special characters.
  • File Too Big - If you're attempting to back up a QuickBooks file that's more than 3 GIG in size.
  • Improper Drive or Insufficient Access Rights - Using an external drive, flash drive, or a directory without the necessary Windows access rights (full permissions) can stop a QuickBooks Backup.
  • Preference Setting Conflict - Automatic or scheduled backups may fail due to the use of the "Keep QuickBooks running for quick startups" feature. In these cases, a .tmp file is usually created in the QuickBooks directory where your file is saved.

 

Once done, you can attempt to run the scheduled backup again to check if you can access it, or review your scheduled automatic backup settings from your account and configure them properly.
