Transaction Detail by Account Report causing error in Management Report

I created a custom Transaction Detail by Account report that I can export to a PDF on its own just fine but when I try to include it in a Management Report, I cannot generate the report. I get a message stating "Something went wrong. Failed to preview a report." I get the same message when trying to export it as well. The report is only 5 columns and 5 pages long. The whole management report I would estimate to be about 12 pages long. I tried a different client's account and ran into the same problem. Has anyone else experienced the same issue and was able to problem-solve? I am not opposed to using a different report, but I haven't found any other report that can show me a detail of transactions either by Split Account or Vendor that also shows the bank feed description.

Transaction Detail by Account Report causing error in Management Report

I can help you successfully run and export the Transaction Detail by Account report, bookkeeper105.

We can start by logging in to your QBO account using an incognito or private browser window to see if this is a browser-related issue. This doesn't record and store cached files.

  • Google Chrome: press Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: press Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: press Command + Shift + N

If you can run and export the report without getting the error, return to your regular browser and clear its cache. Otherwise, you can use other supported browsers.

In addition, we can consider running Transaction List by Vendor or Transaction List with Splits reports and filter them accordingly to show the desired information.

  1. From your left panel, go to Reports.
  2. In the Find report by name dropdown, search for Transaction List by Vendor or Transaction List with Splits.
  3. Click the Switch to classic view icon from the right side of the screen.
  4. In the Group by dropdown, select Account.
  5. Click Customize and select Date, Transaction Type, Num, Posting, Memo/Description, Account, Amount, and Split under Change columns.
  6. Click Run report.

Moreover, refer to this article if you want to save your report's current customization: Create, access, and modify memorized reports.

Transaction Detail by Account Report causing error in Management Report

I have tried the Incognito window and that did not solve the issue.

The Transaction List by Vendor report does not work for me because the bank feed descriptions will not populate in the Memo/Description column (I believe I read a reasoning for this somewhere but I cannot remember what it was).

I think the Transaction List with Splits will work for me. I just changed the Group by dropdown to Name instead of Accounts.

Transaction Detail by Account Report causing error in Management Report

Thanks for keeping us updated and for trying the suggested troubleshooting steps, @bookkeeper105. It's also great to hear that the Transaction List with Splits report is a suitable alternative for you.

Since the error persists even after using an incognito mode, I recommend reaching out to our Phone Support team for further investigation. They can safely look at your account and determine the main cause of the error.

Regarding the Transaction List by Vendor report, please know that the information shown under the Description/Memo column is the memo for added bank transactions. Thus, the bank description won't appear on the report.

In your case, we can add the bank description manually to your added transactions. I'll guide you on how:

  1. Click the Transactions from the left menu., then Bank Transactions.
  2. Select the appropriate bank account.
  3. Go to the Categorized tab. As you can see in the sample screenshot, there's no Memo added to the transaction.

  4. Click the added transaction link or Go to bank register.

  5. Then, enter the information in the Memo field.

Make sure that the added transactions have information in the Memo field same as your bank description. This way, it'll show under the Description/Memo column in the report.

If there's information that you want to add that is not available within QuickBooks, you can export the report to Excel. After that, you can personally customize your data further.
