Invoicing functionality bug in Sequoia

I've spent the better part of today diagnosing this issue. This has something to do with Quickbooks (I've tested this issue on QB 2022, 2023, and 2024) and our company file. When I go to generate an invoice that has billable items (time or expenses), and I click "Create Invoice" there is a delay that wasn't there when running on Sonoma (and I have also tested this with the same company file on an older macbook pro running Sonoma 14.7.1). However, the bigger issue is that when clicking ok on the "Choose Billable Time and Costs" dialog (regardless of whether anything is chosen) results in a "spinning beach ball" for about 25-30 seconds. There is no difference if any billable time or expenses are selected. Then, when I go to email the invoice, I hear the "cha ching" (as though the invoice was created/added) but then it says "The Operation Could Not Be Completed" and the invoice is not actually created. It seems like it may have something to do with the Quickbooks Payments functionality, but I'm not sure.

I may have to roll back to Sonoma until this is fixed.

Invoicing functionality bug in Sequoia

We appreciate your efforts, @jasonluros, and we don’t want you to face this problem. Let me explain the problem causing errors when creating invoices in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) for Mac, so you can resume your work smoothly.

Please note that there's an ongoing investigation (INV-112275) regarding the "The operation could not be completed" error when trying to save an invoice. Our product engineers are aware and actively working on a resolution. While we can't provide a specific timeframe, resolving this issue is a top priority.

In the meantime, I suggest contacting our QBDT Mac support to be added to the affected user's list, ensuring you receive timely updates on this matter as they become available.

Here's how to contact them:

  1. Open this link: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/help/en-us/contact-us.
  2. Select QuickBooks for Mac for your product and click Continue.
  3. Enter your concern and the investigation number as a reference, then click Continue.
  4. Select Chat or Callback.

The QBDT Mac support will be operational on weekdays, providing support and services from 6 AM to 6 PM PT. During these hours, users can access assistance via chat or phone.

As the investigation team continues to work on a permanent solution to the issue at hand, I recommend performing this temporary workaround to help mitigate any disruptions:

  1. Select the Create Invoice.
  2. Select the Accept Bank Transfer button at the bottom of the invoice.
  3. Click the Send Email button.
  4. Click Save Invoice.

When you receive the complete payment immediately upon completing a sale, you can document this transaction as a sales receipt. It streamlines the accounting process by combining the sale and payment in one entry.

We value your feedback on your experience with our support team, so please take a moment to share your thoughts in the comments section below. If you require any further assistance with managing your invoices or have any specific questions, never hesitate to reach out.

Thank you for letting me know about the bug (INV-112275).

There is no "Accept Bank Transfer" button or functionality in Quickbooks Desktop for Mac 2022 (ie Quickbooks Mac Plus 2022).

Invoicing functionality bug in Sequoia

Hello @jasonluros

I've been able to reproduce this situation (or a similar one) with Sequoia.  When I attempted the problem with prior macOS's it worked as expected.  For myself, I narrowed it down to using my Magic Mouse or a Trackpad, if I attempt to swipe just randomly I encounter the similar situation you're encountering on Sequoia, if I use a 3rd party mouse (that doesn't have a swipe functionality) then it works as expected.  I've report this problem up to the Development team so they are aware of this.

Thanks, Mitch. Can you describe your observations in terms of functionality and/or user interface experience? I’m just wondering whether it’s the same issue (delays in the selecting of billable time or expenses) or a related but different issue.

For myself, I had a Bill with reimbursable expenses on it recorded.  I went to create an Invoice for the Customer (that was used on the Bill), I received the message about existing Billable Time/Expenses and clicked OK to that.  Then I just happened to swipe my finger on my Magic Mouse out of habit and it prompted a message about how cannot record a blank transaction.  I tried this with different macOS's and different mice/trackpads to try and narrow this down.  What it looks like is when I swipe (either on purpose or accidentally) it's trying to force a recording of the transaction in it's current state.

That's interesting. I've reproduced your findings as well. If I unplug my external mouse and keyboard, the issue with the spinning beach ball doesn't occur, but when I try to save and/or email the invoice, it does say that there was an error and that the transaction couldn't be saved.

What error message are you receiving when you try to save the transaction?

Invoicing functionality bug in Sequoia

Besides the spinning beach ball (only when running Quickbooks R12.1 and R12.2 on Sequoia, not Sonoma), I get the following when I click Save:

"The operation could not be completed." (written in bold) and "No other information is available about the problem."

Nothing in the R12.2 release fixed this outstanding issue.

Did you ever get this fixed? because I am having the same issue and no one seems to know how to help me fix it

Unfortunately I haven't. The process I have found to sort of work around the issue for now is to add the billable time/expenses and then wait the 20-30 seconds while the "spinning beach ball" process runs as step 1, and then either save the invoice without credit card processing/payments as step 2, and then add the credit card processing as step 3. The alternative that also works, but is inconvenient is to run Quickbooks Server on my Sequoia system and use a virtual machine in Parallels running Sonoma as the client. The client/server model with the client running Sonoma doesn't seem to have the same issue, but isn't a long term solution.

I suggest reaching out to our live expert, as this issue requires further analysis and our Live Support team is available to help. They can utilize screen-sharing in a secure environment to address the invoicing error in real-time. Below are the instructions on how to contact them:

  1. Open QuickBooks.

For now, to save the invoice, please ensure that neither ACH nor Credit Card is selected. Here's how:

  1. Create an Invoice.
  2. Skip this step (Select the Accept Bank Transfer button at the bottom of the Invoice).
  3. Click the Send Email button.
  4. Save Invoice.

After saving it, reopen the saved invoice, choose the ACH or Credit Card payment option, and then save the invoice once more.

Running QB in client/server mode using a Sonoma Virtual Machine in Parallels doesn't result in the delay. That's the way we've been handling it when we run monthly client invoice/statement/bills. For a business with a higher volume or billing frequency, I think I'd just migrate to a different software solution if Intuit isn't going to fix this major issue.
