I am using QB 2015 Pro and last week I started getting an error message when I try to attach a document to a bill or invoice.
I have not had any problems until last week, I am up to date on all updates and patches.
Has anyone else ran into this problem or does anyone have a solution?

I just found this article on Accountex, a very good source of qb info. At the bottom, it says office 2016 is not compatible with qb. The article is older, so I am not sure if that is the issue. Basically, this is what it says:
Intuit’s system requirements websites don’t list any version of QuickBooks as being compatible with Microsoft Office 2016 at this time, even the recently released QuickBooks 2016 product. That isn’t surprising, as Intuit usually starts final testing with any new Microsoft product after the public release (since Microsoft tends to make changes right up to the last moment). It can take time for them to make adjustments.
My recommendation is that unless there is a strong reason for you to move up to Office 2016, don’t rush into it now if you are using QuickBooks. If you need to, though, everything should work fine other than Microsoft Outlook, in general as long as you have up-to-date software (including QuickBooks 2016). If you have older software, you may have problems. Looking at specific versions of QuickBooks:
QuickBooks 2016: Everything should work other than although you might have problems with Microsoft Outlook.
QuickBooks 2015: Everything should work (other than although you may have trouble with Microsoft Outlook), but you will need to patch your system if you want to use QuickBooks Statement Writer.
So perhaps it is fixed by now. Every article on the help/support area I could find had dead links. I would try going to help>update qb and do a full update and see if that helps.
What kind of document are you trying to attach? If it is an excel spreadsheet, it won't attach (security issue). Here is a link to FAQ's on attaching doc in QB. If it doesn't help, provide us with more info and perhaps an error message.
The documents are PDF files. They are either downloaded from my email from the vendor or I scan them to my system as a PDF. I have been doing this for over a year and just started to experience the problem. It really makes no sense at all.
what error code message are you receiving?
When I try to attach the file I get a box in the middle of the screen.
The only thing that has changed is that I upgraded to Office 2016 from Office 2010.

Were you ever able to resolve this problem, because I am currently experiencing this same issue, we aren ot using Word 2016. Please advise. I cannot attach pdf's to invoices i have to drag the item twice the first time it will not attach.
Hi There! I am away at a conference. I could not locate any issues relating to that error code. maybe moderator @Anonymous can find a resoution for you. Sorry.
Hey @SDV207,
Happy to help! Are you unable to attach .doc files as well as .pdf files? Have you checked your Document Center in QuickBooks Desktop to see if documents are being saved to the program?
Hi there, BoatdockOCPP.
Thank you for reaching out the QuickBooks Community. Allow me to help you get past the error message so you can attach a document to a bill or an invoice.
Unrecoverable error in QuickBooks Desktop could be caused by data damage in the company file for specific users, an application issue, and system or computer issues.
Here's an article that will guide you on how to fix unrecoverable error in QuickBooks Desktop: https://community.intuit.com/articles/1532123.
Since this only happens when you upgraded from Office 2010 to Office 2016, there is a possibility that the error is due to the operating system not meeting the requirement for your version of QuickBooks Desktop.
Check out this article to know more about the system requirements for QuickBooks Desktop 2015: System requirements for QuickBooks 2015 and Enterprise Solutions 15.0.
I hope this helps. Feel free to reach out to us if you have any other questions. Wishing you continued success!
This did not happen when we upgraded microsoft. Nothing was changed on the computer regarding software. I have even reinstalled the Quickboojks software to try and resolve. it will not allow me to attach pdf to bills or invoices unless i drag the pdf twice.
I have went through quickbooks technical help also. Not sure if its an adobe problem. but for my finance department it is very frustrating because of the amount of billing they need to process.
Please advise. any solution would be helpful.
Documents are being saved. But when I am processing billing scanning invoices to be attached, when I try to drag the invoice or attach it. It will not allow me to do so unless it is done twice.
it has to be dragged twice.
Hello, SVD207.
We appreciate your effort in trying to resolve the issue. I want to make sure this is properly addressed.
I understand you've already given our Technical Support Team a call, but since this issue requires personal information to view updates on your previous call's case number, I suggest giving them another call. This might have been checked already for further research.
You can reach them through this link: https://help.quickbooks.intuit.com/en_US/contact.
1. Choose QuickBooks Desktop.
2. Select your QuickBooks version.
3. On the Contact Us page, click a topic.
4. Click on the Get Phone Number button to see the support number.
Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help. Enjoy your day!
In an effort to resolve this I have contacted Quickbooks directly for technical assistance and they were not able to resolve the issue.
Is there a setting in adobe that needs to be changed to allow pdf attachments in Quickbooks. This is beyond frustrating because of the amoutn of billing we have.
Please advise.
Please refrain from telling me to contact quickbooks they have already been contacted and have not been able to resolve the issue.
thank you.
While I don't know of a specific setting in Adobe, have you checked that Adobe Acrobat is your default PDF reader for your system? Go to settings > apps > default apps (while you are there, make sure QB has Adobe selected as it's default app) > and "choose default app by file type" to check that your system is using the appropriate program.
I have done this, uninstalled and reinstalled both quickbooks and adobe. Still the pdf attachment function is not working correctly.
Hello, I noticed you expressed that you cannot attach an excel to an invoice when emailing. I used to be able to do that in the past but am no longer able. Is there a fix? I invoice our clients and need to send the billing back up which is on an Excel spreadsheet. QB Pro 2015 now always crashes when I try to add the excel attachment.
Hey there, @RickG.
Thank you for stopping by the Community. You've come to the right place to get help with anything QuickBooks. I see you're having trouble with QuickBooks Crashing. I've got just the thing that should help you resolve this. My first recommendation is to try running a Clean install of QuickBooks. Here's how:
Uninstall QuickBooks Desktop:
Rename the Installation folders:
Reinstall QuickBooks Desktop:
If you're still having issues, you may be having an issue with the company file itself. You can troubleshoot data damage by running a rebuild and a verify. I'm attaching the article for steps on how to perform these diagnostics here.
If you have any questions about these steps, or if you need anything else, please feel free to reach out to the Community again.
I am having a problem attaching a PDF to an invoice. It will shut down Quickbooks. It was fine yesterday. I used it and didn't have a problem, but today I have tried everything but it just shuts Quickbooks down.
Hey @greenwellmfg,
Are you having the same problem with QuickBooks Desktop, or QuickBooks Online.
If it's the prior, I would do the following:
1. Make sure your software is up to date.
2. Try adding an attachment again.
3. If that still doesn't work, Backup your system file so you always have a save point. Then, download File Doctor and let it do a diagnostic of your software. This should automatically correct most problems.
Let us know if that does the trick.
I am currently experiencing this same issue and have done for a few months now. It did work fine and now i get the security messages whenever I try and attach any type of file! Its getting frustrating!
I cannot bring in .xls .csv .xlsm .pdf . doc you name it I have tried. I keep getting the same message:
For security reasons, we do not allow you to upload this type of file | Oct Exps.docx (17.3 kb) |
For security reasons, we do not allow you to upload this type of file | Oct Exps.xls (30.5 kb) |
And so on, I have reported this as an issue, the other person at Quickbooks tried the files with no problem whatsoever, re-sent it back to me and hey presto it attached with no issue. Am puzzled as to what is the issue with my pc as everything is up to date?
Hello there, bored-frustrated.
Thanks for reaching out to us here in the Community. I’d be glad to share a few details regarding the error you’ve encountered when attaching documents.
The issue is already reported to our engineers and they’re currently working towards a permanent resolution. I suggest contacting our QuickBooks Online Customer Care Team to receive email update.
They can securely pull up your account and add your company to the list of affected users.
As a workaround, remove the extra space just before ".<ext>" and then attach the documents again.
I appreciate your patience while we look into this. If you have additional questions about working in QuickBooks, feel free to leave a comment below. I'll be glad to keep helping.
I have the same exact problem with my quick books premiere edition 2016.
I have to scan everything twice in order for it to save on an invoice or a bill. I tried dragging the file from the desktop into QB and QB shuts down when I attempt this.
When I called this in, two people could not explain or help so they sent me here.
The sample file does not have this issue, only my main file does.
I downloaded File Doctor and it found no issues.
I ran the repair option instead of uninstalling QB. I haven't tried uninstalling, then installing again yet.
This is very frustrating and time consuming to have to scan every document twice!
Hi there, @JaclynOfficeManager.
Thank you for lopping into this post and giving the complete details of the troubleshooting you've tried to resolve your attachment problem.
Since you're still getting the same issue after performing those troubleshooting steps, I'd recommend calling our QuickBooks Desktop Customer Care team. They have the tools, such as screen sharing, that can double-check your QuickBooks and perform more troubleshooting steps to get this working for you.
And of course, I’m here to help you if you have other concerns. Please also keep me posted on how the call goes. I'd like to make sure this is taken care of.
