1099 Misc to 1099 NEC

Can I change 1099 Misc to 1099 NEC for printing vendor 1099's. The forms are different and printing isn't aligning?   I'm running Quickbooks Premier for Contractors '16.  Thanks in advance!

I'll help you change your 1099-MISC to 1099-NEC, @Userlinda.

If you paid 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC contractors and posted to the same account, you will need to edit your chart of accounts to ensure separate accounts are available for each form to use.

Then, you can either create a journal entry to move amounts to show in the newly created 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC accounts or you can edit existing payments to the new accounts.

Here's how:

  1. Backup your QuickBooks Desktop file
  2. Create a 1099 Summary report
  3. Create a new account
  4. Move the payments to the new account.
  5. Create a 1099 Summary report

You can refer to this article for the detailed steps. Just go over towards the QuickBooks Desktop drop-down: Modify your chart of accounts for your 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC filing.

Once you're done, you are ready to print your 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC forms.

Please let me know if you still have questions or concerns with 1099s. I'll be here for you. Take care and have a nice day ahead.

Thanks for the information.  The instructions say to follow steps for your version of Qbb's, where is this option.  In "mapping" in COA's my only option is 1099 MISC.  Back to my original question, does it matter that I have a 2016 version?  I had to have my CPA do our 1099's this year due to this issue.

I can share some information about printing 3-part 1099s in QuickBooks Desktop, @Userlinda.

You should have a supported version of QuickBooks Desktop with its latest release to print 3-part 1099s in QuickBooks Desktop. Below are the releases required to print 1099 NEC forms in QuickBooks Desktop for Windows:

  • QuickBooks 2022/Enterprise 22 - R3_71 (or later)
  • QuickBooks 2021/Enterprise 21 - R8_62 (or later)
  • QuickBooks 2020/Enterprise 20 - RR13_39 (or later)
  • QuickBooks 2019/Enterprise 19 - R16_55 (or later)

While working with your company file, you can press F2 on your keyboard to check the release version of your QuickBooks.

After creating 1099-MISC, you'll need to repeat the steps for the 1099-NEC form. If you need to file both the 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC you will need to adjust your Chart of Accounts to ensure accounts are set up specifically for each form. Once these steps are completed, you're ready to begin filing your 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC forms.

Also, you'll want to know how to access and print your other tax forms to save a copy for future use. Please refer to this article for the detailed steps: View and print payroll tax forms.

I'm always here if you have more questions about managing your payroll forms in QBDT. I'd be glad to hear more from you in the comment section. Take care and enjoy the rest of the day.

Thanks for the attempt at helping!  Like I said in the beginning I have QBB Premier Contractor Edition.  From what you suggested, all the updates are for Enterprise.   The last update in my company was 5/2019.

Thank you for responding, Userlinda.

Let me add some information about the QuickBooks updates and it's latest releases.

The release versions mentioned by colleague MaryJoyD also applies to QuickBooks Desktop Pro and Premier editions. To make sure you have the latest available release for your QuickBooks, check out these links below:

If you don't have the latest release installed yet, I recommend resetting the updates.

Here's how:

  1. Close your company files and QuickBooks.
  2. Open the Windows Start menu.
  3. Search for QuickBooks Desktop. Right-click the icon and select Run as administrator.
  4. On the No Company Open screen, go to the Help menu, then choose Update QuickBooks Desktop.
  5. Click the Options tab. Select Mark All and then Save.
  6. Go to the Update Now tab and tap the Reset Update checkbox.
  7. When you're ready, select Get Updates.

After downloading the updates, close and reopen QuickBooks Desktop to install the updates. Once done, confirm if the release version and extension have been updated successfully.

That's it. You should be able to print and align the 1099 forms correctly.

I've included this link in case you encounter some printing issues: Troubleshoot Issues with Printing and .PDF Files.

I wanna make sure I got you covered. Leave a comment below for any follow-up questions about 1099s. I'll be here to check. Have a great day!

Hi Archie,

Thanks for the suggestion.  My Qbb's has auto updates on but I ran it regardless.  Nothing changed and I can only find options for 1099 MISC forms in the relevant COGS account.

Hi there, Userlinda.

I appreciate you trying all of the troubleshooting steps mentioned above. I want to make sure you're able to align and print the 1099 forms correctly.

Since none of the previously mentioned steps did the trick, I recommend reaching out to a member of the Desktop Support Team. Agents have the necessary tools, such as the ability to share screens, to take a more in depth look at the issue.

Here's how to get in touch with the team:

1. With QuickBooks open, press the F1 key on your keyboard.
2. Select Contact Us.
3. Enter Support in the field and click Continue.
4. From here you can begin a live chat session with an agent.

The following linked article provides these steps if you ever need them again in the future: Contact the QuickBooks Desktop Customer Support Team
