Can I change an account from a sub-account to a non-sub-account?

Yes, go into Accounting -> Chart of Accounts and then Edit for the account you would like to make a non-sub account. You will is a checkbox next to where is reads "Is sub account" and you simply uncheck that box.

3. In the Action column, use the drop-down and click Edit.
