Can I unmerge clients? I merge two clients by mistake. How can I undo that merge and make sure their transactions are associated with the proper client?

I merge two clients by mistake. I misunderstood the system's question because it didn't specify which client I was merging one with as I was updating a client profile. Ugh.

How can I undo that merge and make sure their transactions are associated with the proper client? I see the action in the Audit Log, but there is not simple way to reverse the action.

It looks like I will have to create a new version of the client I merged into another and then associate the transaction with her, does that seem right?

We appreciate you reaching out here today, Christine. I'd gladly assist you in handling customer profiles and the transactions linked to them within your account.

With QuickBooks Online, merging two client accounts is permanent. Unmerging these profiles is unavailable since this process is irreversible. However, you're right, you'll have the option to create a new customer and edit each transaction associated with that specific customer.

To do that:

  1. Go to Sales from the menu panel and select Customers.
  2. Click New Customer.
  3. In the Customer display name field, enter what you want to display for the customer.
  4. Then, review each section and enter any other important customer info.
  5. If the customer is tax exempt, go to the Additional info section and select the checkbox for This customer is tax exempt. Then, select why they’re tax exempt in the Reason for exemption ▼ dropdown.
  6. Once done, select Save.
