Can you upcharge contractor rates to a customer?

I have contractors I pay an hourly rate but upcharge my customer for their labor. When I add time to the project it doesnt show a profit on the project because I have to enter the rate I charge for their services and not the rate I acutally pay them. Is there a way to do this, perhaps I have not set something up correctly?

Can you upcharge contractor rates to a customer?

It's great to see you here in the Community, @Beaglemom. I can provide further details about how QuickBooks Online handles the percentage of goods and services items.

Follow these steps below:

  1. Tick the + New icon.
  2. Select the transaction (Bill, Expense, or Check) you want to create.
  3. Choose the payee.
  4. In the Category column, select the expense account for the transaction.
  5. Enter the description and amount of the expense, then tap the Billable checkbox. You can also manually enter the percentage for the next account in the Category column.
  6. In the Customer column, select the customer you want to bill for this expense.
  7. Enter or make sure the markup % is correct, then hit the Tax checkbox or choose a tax agency if you want to charge tax.
  8. Press Save and close.

For additional information on how to, read this article: Enter billable expenses.

Alternatively, see the attached articles for future reference:

Leave a comment for any additional concerns about markup percentages in QuickBooks. I’d be happy to lend help. Have a good day!

If I follow these instructions will this show as a profit on the project profitability under the labor / time section?

Can you upcharge contractor rates to a customer?

Hi there, Beaglemom.

Thanks for getting back to this thread. Allow me to chime in and provide a piece of information if what happens when following instructions provided by my colleague.

As I tried to replicate the steps, it doesn't show under the labor/time section. It normally shows under the project.

In addition, I've added this article to help you redo the expense: Enter, edit, or delete expenses in QuickBooks Online.

I'm always here if you have questions about your account. Let me know in the Reply section below. Take care and have a wonderful day!
