Sometimes local internet cache files stored in the system can cause unexpected behavior in the product, @karen39.
It would be best to perform some basic troubleshooting steps to fix this issue.
We can start by using a private browser. This a special mode where the browser doesn't record the browsing activity on the local device, so no trace will be left on the computer. You can simply press these commands to access this mode:
If the reference number shows back, then let's clear the cache in your web browser or try using a different supported browser. This might be a temporary issue with QuickBooks and the current browser that you use.

Reymond,
I did all the clearing of the caches like it was suggested before I contacted you. However I did not try the incognito mode. I did that with not much optimism that this would work but much to my surprise it did. Thank you for nudging me to try it. When I went back into normal mode, I was able to see the reference numbers.
Thanks for coming to my rescue.
Karen
