How can I edit the service type utilizing the time entry... it always defaults to a certain type and I cant change on invoice without losing the time data

I appreciate you getting back to this thread, @loren-brandenbur. I'll be glad to add some details to help you edit the service type on the time entry details page.

To begin, make sure to turn on the Time tracking feature in the Accounts and Settings. Doing this will add the service field to the Timesheet.

Here's how:

  1. In your QBO account, go to the Gear icon.
  2. Choose Accounts and Settings.
  3. Select the Advanced tab.
  4. Click the Time Tracking section, turn on the Add Service field to Timesheets option.
  5. Select Save and Done.

Then, go back to the Projects menu, and proceed to the following steps for the Service dropdown menu to appear on the Time entry details page.

  1. Find and choose the project you want to edit.
  2. Choose the Time Activity tab.
  3. Open the details of the time entry by selecting the date.

  4. On the Time entry details page, click the Save button.

  5. Now the Service dropdown menu will appear and you will have the option to edit this.
  6. Once done, click Save again to keep the changes.

If the issue persists, we can perform some troubleshooting steps to fix this. There are times that the browser is full of frequently accessed page resources, which causes some errors or unusual responses. Let's start accessing your account using a different or a private browser.

Once you have successfully edit the service type, go back to your regular browser and clear its cache. This is done to speed up the process next time you do a transaction in QuickBooks Online. Also, an alternative way is to use other compatible browsers.

Additionally, let me add these articles to help you manage projects in QuickBooks Online:

I got your back, @loren-brandenbur.

Editing the service item assigned to a project won't update the associated invoice. To help you change it, please refer to these steps:

  1. Sign in to your QuickBooks Online (QBO) account, and navigate to the Projects menu.
  2. Locate and select the project you want to edit the details.
  3. Next, go to the Time Activity tab.
  4. Expand the details of the time entry by clicking the date.
  5. Then, select the service item to change it.
  6. You'll be routed to the Time Activity page. From there, click the Service drop-down and choose the correct service type.
  7. Once done, select Save and close.

For your reference, check out this link: Set up and create projects in QuickBooks Online.

QBO makes it easy to keep track of the costs associated with various parts of your projects. You can see your labor costs based on your actual payroll expenses utilizing this method.

Feel free to post here anytime you have concerns about editing your service type for a project. I'll be happy to assist you. Take care always.

How can I edit the service type utilizing the time entry... it always defaults to a certain type and I cant change on invoice without losing the time data

Thanks @DivinaMercy_N for the quick reply... thats pretty much what I've tried. The only difference is that I don't have any service options on the "Time entry details" page.... and maybe that's the problem as it doesn't  launch "time activity page" it lunches "Time entry details".

With the options only for

  • Date
  • Duration
  • Customer/project
  • Billable
  • Notes
