How can you add a custom detail type in accounts with the online version of QB?

Hi there, kendall.

Currently, we're unable to add the customer detail type in QuickBooks Online. You can enter your custom detail type in the Description field instead.

You can also share this functionality with our developers through feedback. Just click the Gear icon at the top and select Feedback.

Don't hesitate to keep in touch if there's anything else we can do for you.

How can you add a custom detail type in accounts with the online version of QB?

As stated no you can not

Detail type is something intuit invented, it only confuses things, oh and it does name the account for you.

An account is an account, select a detail type since QBO requires it, and name it what you wish

You can not, PERIOD.

This message for quickbooks, if you like to work with the UK accountants you should really update your COA and make it editable.

It limits us and confusing. I hope you can take this matter seriously.

Feedback helps you to improve? Seriously.  It's pretty clear that you have no particular interest in improving. How many years have people been asking for Sales Orders?

Custom detail types are a basic need.

Good things there are competitors, right?   Looks like we'll be checking them out. Intuit is a bit too big and bloated to be interested in service.

How can you add a custom detail type in accounts with the online version of QB?

We migrated from desktop to online (under my protest), and in desktop we created a customized detail type for a certain account. We now want to add a sub account, and I cannot because I can't match the detail type of the parent account (as it is custom).

So how do I add this sub without renaming the "detail type" for the parent account and all the sibling account?

Why would you remove this basic functionality?

We really do appreciate this feedback, @Lumberprincess.

We wanted you to know that providing the best possible solutions to our customers is our main goal here in the Community.

For now, the option to add a new Detail Type accounts is unavailable in QuickBooks Online. However, you can create a sub-account and match it to the closest parent account.

Let me send feedback to our developers so they can check it and probably add this feature in any future updates.

I encourage you to visiting our QuickBooks Online Blog to stay current with our news and updates.

Good day, RobertPolito.

I'll forward a feedback about this since we're still unable to create a custom detail type in QuickBooks. For now, you can make use of the Name field.

Also, you'll want to use account numbers in your chart of accounts. You can read this guide if want to connect bank and credit card accounts to QuickBooks Online.

Keep your posts coming if you need more help. Have a great day!

It's been at least a year since this thread started and still not able to customize? It seems you are not interested in feedback since nothing has been done on this subject in AT LEAST a year!

How can you add a custom detail type in accounts with the online version of QB?

I just signed up for QB Online and there are multiple expense categories I need that are not listed.

I see by this thread this is. a longstanding issue.

Surprising to me as I have what is clearly a common requirement.

A user definitely needs to be able to create their own revenue and expense categories...

Been having reminder invoices for few weeks now and still no resolution or valid feedback from quickbooks.

Reminder invoices shows "$detail.srNo" on the invoices, looks very unprofessional!

Let's perform some troubleshooting steps to get the reminder invoice working, FrustratedJHB2020.

I appreciate you providing us a screenshot to better isolate this issue. I'll personally share your feedback with our Customer Support Team regarding this one. We'll be able to take action on improving our customer service.

I've checked here on our end and there's no reported case where special characters appearing in an invoice. To check if this is a browser issue or not, let's access QuickBooks Online (QBO) using a private or incognito window.

Here's how you can access private browser:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Microsoft Edge: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: Command + Shift + N

Then, manually send the invoice reminders again.

If it works, try clearing your browser's cache to delete temporarily stored files and free some space on your browser. You can also use other supported, up-to-date browsers like Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, or Mozilla Firefox to be thorough..

For more details about this one, you can check pout this article: Clear cache and cookies to fix issues when using QuickBooks Online.

If the same thing happens, let's make sure we downloaded the latest version of the Adobe Reader.

If the problem persists, let's repair your Adobe installation. It's possible there's a damaged component in the PDF file causing special characters to appear in the reminder invoice. For the detailed steps, please refer to this article: How to update, repair, or re-install Adobe Reader/Acrobat

I'm just one reply away if you need a hand with creating recurring transactions or any QBO related. I'll be here to ensure your success. Take care always.

How can you add a custom detail type in accounts with the online version of QB?

This is BS BS BS BS.  This is no only a simple fix, but one that every business owner needs and I am sure is as frustrated as I am for the lack of intuitiveness for a company called intuit.  Do you really think that the magazine stand in New York City has the same two dozen categories as the trucking fleet in rural America?  They call it logistics for a reason.

And, YES, I have tried your backdoor fix " However, you can create a sub-account and match it to the closest parent account."  It is tediously frustrating and counter-INTUITive!!!

INFURIATED!

Hi guys,

It's May 2020! Nearly the end to another financial year. I'm a new user and in setting up new companies have come across this issue just recently. I thought you would have a Tools & Eqipment or Plant & Equipment options for detail type, as I need to seperate Tools & Equipment from Supplies & Materials, or at least have custom options like previous programs.

I see from this thread quite clearly that issue has yet to be resolved???

Thanks for joining this thread, @BOE.

At this time, there's not a way to add custom options for Detail Types in QuickBooks Online. I'm going to submit feedback to our Product Development Team about bringing in a feature to allow customization or bring in additional options for Detail Types in accounts. You can visit our Blog to see what's new to our Products and see what's coming in the future.

How can you add a custom detail type in accounts with the online version of QB?

This is ridiculous.....You should provide the same functionality that you have with the Stand-alone version.  Customers have been begging for this for over a year!!!!  Seem that like this would be very close to a top priority with all the customer feedback.....!!!! We need to be able to put what we as customers want and not your developers arbitrarily decide for us......every business has different needs and this is a function we all need...!!!  Quite the BS and get it done.....!!!

The system is very bad. Developers should not intervene with how the accountants will handle and manage the chart of accounts and other accounting activities. You should design the system which will allow the users to change with ease. Another thing, You know already that companies do pay taxes. Some withholding agents (taxpayers) withhold or deduct a portion of money before they pay the vendor. I see it in India as TDS or Tax Deducted at Source. In our country, the TDS is just named as Withholding Tax, they why this cannot be setup in our country? This is so ridiculous, your are selling your product globally yet there's no freedom for customization. Before you market your product to different countries, you need to do some research, not just trying to make a dress for one that fits all!!

It's nearly 2021 and still this issue hasn't been addressed.

It's pretty clear that Quickbooks / Intuit have ZERO intention to actually listening to their customers.

It will undoubtedly be their downfall, I'm off to use Zero !!!!

How can you add a custom detail type in accounts with the online version of QB?

@AileneA this issue was raised over TWO years ago and you're trying to convince the community that your developers are "working hard" to find a fix. Come off it!!!

Its clear that either your developers are under qualified, your company is crap at managing its developers or you just don't care about your customers needs.

Please don't hit me back with a standard cut and paste response, I've read them all previously in this thread.

I'll take to social media with a link to this thread and see if that gives Intuit a kick up the backside to do better for its customers.
