Currently, there isn't a feature to add custom detail types. This isn't a product issue, it's how QuickBooks Online is set up.
Our most recent feature request was submitted by my colleague, Ashley H, on 5/19/2020. You can also submit your own suggestions while signed in.
Here's how:
1. Use your Gear (⚙️) icon.
2. Click Feedback.
3. Enter your suggestion(s).
4. Hit Next.
5. Choose Skip and send message.
6. The available drop-down menu can be used to pick an appropriate category.
7. Select Send message.
Your feedback is definitely valuable to Intuit. It goes directly to our Product Development Team and will be considered in future updates. It's important to keep in mind that these are requests, so there isn't a guarantee they'll be created. Submissions can be tracked through our Customer Feedback website.
I'll be here to assist if there's any questions. Have a wonderful day!
@ZackE There is very little point in submitting any suggestions as this thread clearly shows that after TWO years and repeated request from users to incorporate a very BASIC feature, Intuit have repeatedly failed to listen to their customers and act.
One of your colleagues put further up the thread that your developers are working very hard to incorporate the feature that the MAJORITY of your users want, may I suggest that after 2 years you find some new developers as the ones you currently have clearly aren't up to the job.
May I also suggest that instead of cutting and pasting a standard response, maybe yourself or one of your colleagues actually find out why they haven't yet incorporated it and let us all know, That would be much more helpful. (Insert rolling eye emoji here)
Over 2 years now.
Still waiting for a fix or at least a reason why it can't be done.

It's been another year and you still haven't addressed this really simple problem. As it is the detail type is useless. If it was customizable it would be a top management reporting feature. This is a huge fail
Has this been addressed yet?
We are still waiting for your response.
Being able to add a custom detail type in QuickBooks Online (QBO) isn't an option, AnthonyJP.
You can use accounts that are already available in QBO. I'm adding this link to see the list with the corresponding industry type: Listed Accounts.
To help categorize your transactions, check out this article: Learn about the Chart of Accounts in QuickBooks. It also includes selecting the type of business that you have and edit accounts.

Keep me posted if there's anything else you need aside from customizing detail types in QuickBooks. Just leave a comment below and I'll be around to provide the information that you need.
What QB is really saying is that their system NOT going to be updated for add details type leaving QB online unsuited for UK accounting, thus it is being falsely sold for UK users.
I have to spend £ thousand's on my accountant taking time to go through the invoices I enter and adapting for UK classifications.
Falsely sold
Hi,
I wonder if this has been resolved as we are in 2023 now and this issue was raised in 2019.
I am transitioning from GNU Cash and I am finding the Chart of Account in QB to be very primitive.
It is making me question the decision to get involved with QB which has only come about because my accountant uses it and would like me to submit information to him using QB rather than GNU Cash reports.
If this has not been resolved - which appears to be the case - what is the "work around"?
Welcome to the Community, @JohnMike. It's nice to see you here in our forum.
I know how convenient it is to have the ability to add a custom detail type of account in QuickBooks Online. However, the option is currently unavailable in QuickBooks Online. I recommend sending feedback to our software engineers. They may consider and add it to our future product updates.
You might find a different alternative detail type of account that is relevant to your GNU Cash that you'll make as a workaround.
