Hi @tim84,

In QuickBooks for a nonprofit account, you can change the names in your Chart of Accounts without affecting the financial data. Note: Do not change the Category Type and the Detail Type of the account. Let me show you how to do it.

  1. Select Accounting on the left navigation panel and choose Chart of Accounts.
  2. Click the drop-down in the Action column for the account and choose Edit.
  3. Enter the desired information in the Name field.
  4. Click Save and Close.

Also, I suggest consulting an accounting professional if you wanted to change the category and detail type to have your books more accurate.

For additional insight into editing accounts, I recommend the following article: Edit Your Chart of Accounts.

I'd be glad to provide further assistance should you need it. Best regards.

I want to do this as well-  but the account does not show up when I go to edit the COA.  It's the only account I find so far that does not appear, and so is not available for me to edit.

Hello there, JRundberg.

I understand that you need to change the terminology within QuickBooks Online. Since you're unable to change it, you may consider pulling up a report, exporting it to Excel, and changing it from there. Here's how:

  1. Select Reports.
  2. Search and select the report you want to export.
  3. At the top of the report, select the Export icon. Then select Export to Excel.
  4. Save the file somewhere you can easily find, like your Downloads folder or your desktop.

Need data that isn’t found in basic reports? You can create custom reports to get the data that matters to you most.

Drop your comment below if you have other account management concerns. I'll be right here to help you.

Thanks. Yeah, know how to do that. I was hoping it could be done so I didn't have to do adjustments outside of QB.  Oh well. On to other annoying things.
