I am trying to un-map an accounting code for 1099's.

You can find mapping or un-mapping screen when you prepare your 1099 form, @suzannek1. Let me discuss this further.

You'll have to prepare 1099 to map or un-map accounting codes for 1099s in QuickBooks Online (QBO). Upon filing, you'll have to check or uncheck the boxes under the appropriate 1099 category.  From there, you can select which types of payments you made and the expense accounts you use for these payments.

Here's how:

  1. On the left panel, go to Payroll, then select the Contractors option.
  2. At the top part of the page, click on the Prepare 1099s button.
  3. Choose between Let QuickBooks prep for me or Use QuickBooks to prep my own.
  4. In the Categorize payments to contractors step, you will see a list of expense accounts on the left side and the 1099 categories on the right side.
  5. Check the boxes under the appropriate 1099 category.
  6. Choose on the Save or Next button to finalize your changes.

Make sure to review your mappings carefully to ensure they comply with IRS requirements for 1099 reporting. To do so, check out this article: Modify your chart of accounts for your 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC filing

Additionally, you may visit this helpful resource and learn about how to fix and resubmit 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC forms rejected by the IRS: Fix rejected 1099 forms.

Feel free to reach out in the comments if you require additional assistance managing 1099 forms. I'm always here to provide answers. Have a good one.

Thankyou.  I don't have a "lets get started " button.

I am trying to un-map an accounting code for 1099's.

Just to clarify, the Let's Get Started option my colleague mentioned for preparing 1099s and mapping/unmapping accounts differs slightly from the current process, @suzannek1. Let's begin anew to correctly map your 1099s accounts.

To start, if you have an active subscription to either Contractor Payments or QBO Payroll, you can un-map accounts when you manually prepare for the 1099s. To do so, follow the steps below:

  1. Go to the left navigation panel and select Payroll.
  2. In the Contractors menu, click on Prepare 1099s.
  3. Select the option Use QuickBooks to prep my own, then scroll down and click Try it outimage (5).png
  4. Ensure your company name, email, address, and tax ID are correct and match what's on tax notices or letters from the IRS. Click Confirm info and start filing.
  5. Choose Select Accounts and confirm or select the accounts used for your 1099 expenses or payments, then click Next after verifying your accounts.  image (3).png
  6. Review your recipients and click Next.
  7. Select Preview to view each 1099 and review the amount in each box. Click Continue to 1099-MISCs to view your 1099-MISC forms, then select Next.
  8. If filing fewer than 10 W-2s and 1099s, select No, I'll print and mail to print & mail forms to the IRS yourself. If otherwise, select Continue to e-file.  image (4).png

Feel free to refer to this article for more information on filing your 1099s: Create and file 1099s with QBO.

You can check this article to learn how to adjust your accounts to meet IRS requirements for 1099 reporting. It provides detailed guidance on ensuring your accounts are correctly set up for compliance. Modify your chart of accounts for your 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC filing.

I'll also add this article to learn how to correct and resubmit 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC forms that were rejected by the IRS: Fix rejected 1099 forms.

Furthermore, I suggest exploring QuickBooks Payroll to enhance your payroll processing capabilities. Features such as time-tracking and faster direct deposits can provide significant benefits to your business.

You can ask us anytime if you have additional concerns about managing your 1099 forms. I'm here to support you and will respond promptly.
