I am having issues with the prior accountant giving me a back up of the QuickBooks desktop. He cited legal and licensing issues with making a back up. He sent me the general ledger in Excel. Is it possible to import this into a new set of books. I have never had this happen and it appears you can't just import the general ledger? Any suggestions???
Hello there, @SueSch.
Allow me to share with you some information about Importing/exporting excel files to QuickBooks Desktop.
Using multiple file formats, you can import and export numerous lists and transaction kinds to and from QuickBooks Desktop.
An Excel spreadsheet can be used to import Customer, Vendor, Item, and Chart of accounts data. When importing Excel files from QuickBooks, you have several options. These options are Standard Import, Advanced Import, Add/Edit Multiple Lists.
Option 1: Standard Import:
1. Open the File menu, choose Utilities then Import, and click Excel Files.
2. Hit NO if you get the Add/Edit Multiple List Entries window.
3. Follow the wizard in importing files.
Once done, you can create a backup of your company file then, import the Chart of Accounts.
Mapping your accounts tell QuickBooks how to import the data from your Excel sheet. The column headings in QuickBooks may be different from your Excel, so you’d need to match them.
Please check out this article for further information about options 2 and 3 in importing from Excel: Import or export MS Excel files.

I'm not sure why they use that excuse not to share the backup file. Afaik, it has nothing to do with file sharing with software licenses or copyrights. If you are not familiar with IIF, utilize one of these importer tools to import it as Journal Entry.

To verify my understanding, did you perform the steps provided in Mich_S's post for importing Excel files? If so, did you run into any issues when trying to follow our importing process?
I'll be looking forward to hearing back from you. Have a lovely day!

Hi, is there a way to import the list of issued invoices via Excel or .CSV file?
All I found was about lists of Customers, Vendors, Accounts, and Items, nothing about invoices.
Thank you
Thanks for joining this conversation, @Vagabali.
I'm here to share information about importing invoices in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).
Currently, the option to import invoices via Excel or .csv file is unavailable in QBDT. You can only import Customer, Vendor, Items, and Chart of Accounts
There are two workarounds that you may consider. First is by looking for a third-party application that can integrate with QBDT and allows you to import invoices via Excel or .csv file. Since we can’t recommend a specific app, I suggest visiting our QuickBooks Desktop Apps Store. In this, you can look for an app that suits your business needs.
Another option is by importing your invoices using Intuit Interchange Format (IIF) files. To know more about the process, consider checking out this article for further guidance: Export, import, and edit IIF files.
I also recommend visiting our website for more tips and resources you can use in the future: QBDT self-help articles.
Please post again or leave a comment in this thread if you have more questions about importing transactions or anything else QuickBooks. I'm more than willing to assist. Take care always.
Is it possible to import an Excel file containing annual budget data into QuickBooks Desktop?
Yes, it's possible to import an Excel file containing annual budget data into QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT), @Co-op Chick.
Let's choose the Advanced import option so you can import your annual budget data from an Excel file in QBDT.
Budget is one of the lists you can import from an Excel spreadsheet into QBDT. There are three available options to do this, namely, Standard import, Advanced import, and Add/Edit Multiple Lists.
Since you've already formatted an Excel file containing your annual budget data, it's best to follow the Advanced import option. Before doing so, please make sure you create a backup of your company file for future use. Then, follow these steps:
You can refer to this article's Import Excel file section (Option 2) for the step-by-step guide: Import or export MS Excel files.
Also, you may want to check out this article as your reference to guide you in importing and exporting info in QBDT: Import and export data in QuickBooks Desktop.

What about if I want to import credit card transactions from one company file to another? It's becoming too time consuming entering them in on both files.
You can utilize the exporter tool from the first company file and the importer tool for the second file.

I have over 200 credit card transactions in Excel that I want to export to Quickbooks Desktop for Mac 2022. The instructions I've seen don't seem to apply to this product. For example, going to FILE/UTILITY/IMPORT does not indicat Excel. Going to FILE/IMPORT also does not indicate Excel. Will you explain the procedure for me? Thank you, Steve
Can you ask another file format from your bank? e.g csv, qbo
Or do you need to import sales receipt data?
Thanks for the super-fast response! I used my AMEX for both personal and business last year. I downloaded the AMEX transactions to Excel where personal charges were deleted. I was trying to import the spreadsheet to QB. If it helps I can export the Excel spreadsheet to CSV.
Hi there, Steve112248.
I'm here to share some information about importing bank transaction to QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.
Currently, the supported file when importing bank transactions in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac is a .qbo file.
To download your transactions:
The steps for downloading QuickBooks Web Connect files differ depending on the bank. If you don't know how to obtain the .qbo file from their website, contact your bank for assistance.
Once you have the file, you can now import it into QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.
Here's how:
For more details in importing and downloading bank transactions, check out this link: Download bank transactions in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.
I've also added this article, so you'd also learn how to add and match downloaded transactions in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.

QB trying to get financial institutions to support only their .qbo file format, and won't allow .csv file import. Some financial institutions don't want to support .qbo file format (including mine), and so we are left with no solution.
QB wants financial institutions to support the .qbo file format, and won't support .csv file imports. Some financial institutions (including mine) don't want to support .qbo file format, so we are left without a solution. Intuit needs to shape up here and allow .csv import for transactions on QB desktop. Unfair otherwise.
I appreciate your suggestion, but I prefer not to download unknown software to my computer. This is what QB is driving users to do, which is pretty remarkable.
I appreciate the suggestion, but I don't like downloading unknown software from small-time developers. QB is driving its users to do this, which is pretty remarkable. Why doesn't QB just allow a simple .csv file import for transactions on QB Desktop?
I don't understand why this isnt avaialbe when its seems clearly avaialble to do in the "Accoutant version" why in the world would anyone be concnered with importing chart of accounts, customers etc. as those are setup one time usually and then added as needed. bank or credit card transactions are HUGE and happen all the time. makes no sense that wouldnt be a common feature, intuit needs to add that to the desktop version, especially after forcing everyone to be on a subscription based system forcing cost up on its customers
Yes. Intuit... are you listening? We pay GOOD money for desktop, even more so now with the subscription model, and you STILL don't allow a simple .csv import of credit card / bank transactions. SOME BANKS DON'T WANT TO SUPPORT YOUR QBO FILE FORMAT!
You can import Excel data into QuickBooks Desktop, but it's not as straightforward as importing a backup. Skyvia directly supports QuickBooks Desktop, so you can import the CSV files.
How can I import a credit card statement without a bankfeed option?
