In QuickBooks Self-Employed, specifically, how should I manage getting a refund for all or part of a personal purchase? Should it be categorized as Income?

For example, I bought clothes and returned some. There's the original charge debited out of my account, and then there's the refund which QuickBooks labeled "Income." But it's not "income," it's just that I didn't spend as much in total. Please help me, I'm confused! Thank you.

Glad to have you here, laura-lauraelylc. I'm here to lend a hand.

In QuickBooks Self- Employed, there are two options on how to handle the  refund. You may tag it as Personal or Exclude it.

To exclude transactions:

  1. Go to the Transactions menu on the left panel and find the refund you're working on.
  2. Then, click the right arrow under the ACTION column.
  3. Tick the Exclude this transaction (this is for duplicates, reimbursements, customer refunds, and returned purchases) box.exclude in qbse.png
  4. Click Save.

Also, I recommend seeking expert advice from an accountant to ensure your books will be accurate.
