Inventory Allocation

I am wondering how or where does the inventory go when Finished Goods are being made.  All the videos I've watched look like you build the assembly and then it goes from raw materials straight to finished goods.  Is there a way to not have it go straight to finished goods since most builds go on the floor and get produced and may take weeks.  We want to see the raw materials still on-hand, but allocated so it's not usable materials.  We are using Quickbooks Enterprise Desktop.

Inventory Allocation

It's a delight to have you here in the Community, @kristyz.

Yes, you can mark the build assemblies as pending so it won't go straight to finished goods. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Inventory menu, and then choose Build Assemblies.
  2. Select an Assembly item and Quantity to Build.
  3. Click the Edit menu at the top, and then pick Mark Build As Pending.
  4. Hit Build and Close once done.

Please refer to this article for more info about building assemblies in QuickBooks Desktop: Things to learn about build assemblies.

You may want to run the Pending Builds report to show all builds that are in pending status. Here are the steps how:

  1. Go to the Reports menu, and then select  Inventory.
  2. Pick Pending Builds, and then choose the dateReport Basis you'd like to have.
  3. Click Refresh to show the desired info. This will show all the builds in pending status and you can open them.
  4. Once you have it open, you'll want to mark them as finished goods by clicking the Edit menu again, and then pick Mark Build as Final.
  5. Select Build and Close once ready.
