Is it still not possible to generate an invoice with a payment schedule or to receive partial payments against an invoice? That is crazy!!

Good day, lizmvy.

Generating an invoice with a scheduled payment or receiving partial payments is currently unavailable in QuickBooks Self-Employed.

I know how important it is to have control over your invoices and payments in QuickBooks. I'll be sure to take note and pass along the suggestions you have so you're able to reach a point of resolution as quickly as possible.

I'd suggest visiting our QuickBooks Self-Employed Blog Site. This is where you're able to get the latest news about QuickBooks and what our Product Developer Team is working on. This way you'll stay informed about the updates as well as business tips from our accountants.

In case you need help with categorizing your transactions in QuickBooks Self-Employed, you can refer to this article: Updates to expense categories in QuickBooks Self-Employed. This will help guide you on how to report your self-employed income and expenses.

Keep me posted if you have any other questions about QuickBooks Self-Employed. I'm always up to keep helping. Have a nice day!

I would love to know how others are handling this - beyond generating multiple invoices. It is a very basic thing -- a deposit against a total.

Is this an option on upgraded versions of Quickbooks that would allow the Payment Schedule on the Invoices?

Hey there, GFabry.

While the option to schedule and receive a partial payment on the invoices is unavailable in QuickBooks Self-Employed, you might consider using QuickBooks Online Essentials, Plus, or Advanced.

With these versions, you can create a scheduled transaction and receive partial payments. You can take a look at the following resources below to know more about how partials payment works in QuickBooks Online:

Record invoice payments in QuickBooks Online.

Create recurring transactions in QuickBooks Online.

I'll be here if you need anything else. You take care always!

Rose, thank you very much! We have Quickbooks Online Advance so that is a good start :) The issue we are having is the following if I can use easy numbers:

  • We sell trips that are $10,000
  • A deposit is due at initial sign-up of $1,000
  • Then 3 payments due 3 months/2 months/1 month before the start of the trip of $3,000 each.

The way we do it today, is we create an invoice when a client signs up with the total amount and include the payment schedule in the notes (with dates and amounts). However we never see if a client is paying late because if we pull an Aging Report, we only see if they paid the total invoice or not. We could do it by hand and put reminders but we start having hundreds of clients it becomes difficult. What we are hoping to do with the option discussed in the thread above is to pull an aging (or a different type of report) on a regular basis to check if any are overdue (full invoice or part of the invoice in the payment schedule that its overdue). And not have to create 4 invoices for every payment.

Is this an option? If yes are you (or anyone else) available for hire to show us how to do it?

Thank you so much!!

Hi GFabry!

Thank you for the additional details. Let me join this conversation so I can further help you with invoices.

You can record partial payments in QuickBooks Online, however, one single invoice only has a single due date. The best option is to create different invoices so that your A/R Aging report will also be accurate.

It's great to know that you're subscribed to Quickbooks Online Advanced. With this plan, you can create multiple transactions at once. This is a great feature especially when you need to create more than one transaction for the same customer at the same time.

  1. Go to the + New button and select Batch transactions.
  2. Select Invoices under Select transaction type drop-down and Create under Action.
  3. Enter the details needed, then tap either Save or Save and send.

Another workaround I can suggest is to set up a recurring transaction. This allows you to save and schedule a transaction and the system will automatically generate it for you.

You can check this link: Customize reports in QuickBooks Online. This explains how to personalize the reports in QuickBooks Online to get the right data we need.

Keep on posting here if you need more help. Take care!

@GFabry

You many need an additional app to allow clients paying your one-time fees in instalments.
