Not sure Self Employed version is what I need. Simply tracking investments for a family trust. Can't even add opening balances! No online connection to brokerages.

I would recommend to use QBO Simple Start for your needs.. We have to find yet any 3rd party app/tool supporting QBSE.

QuickBooks Self-Employed (QBSE) is a special version of QuickBooks built especially for freelancers, independent contractors, and service-based entrepreneurs. It is a product which help self-employed individuals in tracking your business related transactions (income and spending). You'll able to claim your home office and mileage deductions as well.

 

Right now, the feature you're looking for is unavailable. To help guide you in the right direction, you can check this article: Choose the right version of QuickBooks. If you're unsure about committing to a new version of QuickBooks, you can test out the products for 30 days. Check the below useful link:

 

QuickBooks Online: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/online.

 

Just toggle the slider to "Free trial for 30 days. Then, choose the version you'd want to try.
