On my iPad with latest version 20.09.2 we cannot “receive payment” on clients that don’t have open invoices when using a credit card. It does work in 20.04.2

Good Afternoon, @Wayne85

Congrats on making your first post here in the QuickBooks Community. I hope you're having a great start to your weekend.

If you receive a payment that exceeds the amount of all open invoice balances, the Unapplied Amount will show at the bottom. Therefore, you can record an unapplied payment,  which will count as a credit towards future invoices for their customer.

However, let's get a better understanding on why you were able to do this in the 20.04.2 and not in the 20.09.2 version of your iPad. Are you facing this problem in the web browser, phone app, or other platforms as well? If not, let's try some basic troubleshooting steps to help resolve this issue. Here are a few of the instructions:

  1. Close and restart the app.
  2. Clear the app data. From the Menu (three horizontal lines), click Help & Feedback. Afterward, press the Refresh Data option and then Yes
  3. Restart your iPad.
  4. Uninstall and reinstall the QuickBooks Online app.

Here's an article that can help you in the future when receiving an invoice payment using the QuickBooks Online app

These simple steps to help you receive a customer's credit card payment should do the trick. If it doesn't, please come back with your results, and we'll take another look at it. I want to make sure that you're able to get back to running your business as soon as possible. I'll be waiting for your response.

So the issue of receive payment only showed up in the new iPad version. It works on previous versions of iPad, iPhone. Also, it works correctly in the QB App for my MacBook and also works correctly via a browser.

I performed all what you asked and the issue is still there.

I am purposely not updating my other iPads so I have this function. We have many clients who pre-pay for services that are performed in the future. and we need to be able to receive payment without being associated with an invoice.

I appreciate you following the troubleshooting steps, Wayne85.

For now, you can use your other devices and the browser to receive payments. I also recommend reaching out to our QuickBooks Support. This is to inform them about the error with the latest version of the QuickBooks Online app. They can open an investigation to check the error and find a resolution on the next update.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Help icon.
  2. Select Talk to a human.
  3. Enter "Talk to a human" again in the search bar.
  4. Choose I still need a human, then click Contact us.
  5. Select Get a callback or Send a message to start a conversation.
