How was your day, @Wendi?
I'm happy to guide you to achieve the information you need.
At this time, you can open the Profit and Loss by Class Report to get a month to month to previous year comparison. Just select the period you want to show and display the columns by Months. To compare the report to another period, select Previous period (PP) under the Compare another period section, then check the box before the % change to add the percentage of difference.

And what do you do to get this on the balance sheet and profit and loss when you don't have classes??? To get a proper report we have to upgrade? These options used to be available on all reports. Where have they gone?
Hi there, Amys Accounting.
I'm here to share some insights about the reporting capabilities of QuickBooks Online.
You don't have to set up classes to get this functionality. The Compare another period option is available in the P&L and Balance Sheet reports of QuickBooks Online Essentials, Plus, and Advanced. You can follow the steps below to be guided in using it:
Alternatively, you can directly pull up the Balance Sheet Comparison, Profit and Loss YTD Comparison, Profit and Loss Comparison report under the Business overview section to easily compare your financial data from the previous year. These reports are also available in all versions of QBO.
However, if you're unable to see the options I've mentioned above, you can try signing in to your QuickBooks account through a private or incognito window. This process will help you determine if it's a browser-related issue since those mode doesn't save site data, cache, and cookies. Check out the shortcut keys below:
Once you're in, head to the Reports menu and open your P&L or Balance Sheet report again. If the Compare another period is now showing, close the incognito window then go back to the regular browser. Next, clear the cache to delete the stored junk files. You can also use another browser to further isolate the issue.
In addition, I've enclosed some articles that will guide you in personalizing and formatting the layout of your reports:

None of these options are available in Simple Start. I was told this on the phone today. It is quite coercive that I would have to upgrade my subscription if I want my reports with those columns and options. I will export to excel and do them myself but I shouldn't have to. Also, when you send me an email for support, I should be able to respond to the email to help resolve my issue....right? But your emails are all "do not reply". Your support system leaves something to be desired for sure.
Thanks for getting back to us, @Amys Accounting.
I have some information about getting the comparison reports in QuickBooks Simple Start. Comparison reports are also available in your subscription. Below are the following.
That said, there's no need for you to upgrade if you're just looking to see the reports mentioned. Just make sure to login as the account Admin or Company Admin to see them. You can follow the above steps provided by my colleague @KlentB to pull up the report.
To see the list of other reports available in your subscription, check out this guide: Report comparison between QuickBooks Online subscriptions.
About the email support, its system generated. You might want to reach out to our live support via chat or call to be able to communicate. Just provide the ticket or case number of your previous call for easy tracking (if you have one).
Here's how to reach out:
Additionally, you can filter the report to add the columns and options. Please check out this article: Customize reports in QuickBooks Online.

Once again you fail to address the issue at hand. I have stated that I know there are comparison reports available, but you do not have the options to enter the percentage and difference columns, which are essential to calculating PPP and doing taxes. This was told to me by your support phone people, that this option is not available in Simple Start and I would have to upgrade to enable this feature. Are you saying that your people on the phone are wrong? If you think so, they show me where this option is available in Simple Start.
