Let's start by ensuring the SSN is correct. This way, we'll be able to fix the error. Here's how:
Retype the entire number.
For more details, please see this article: Correct an Employee's Social Security Number.
If the error persists, I'd suggest contacting our QuickBooks Support Team to determine the main cause of this.
Once done, you can learn about the new changes to the Federal W-4 and how to enter and print a W-4 for your employees.

Thank you for responding. Maybe I have a different version?? Section 1 is Name and learn about workforce. Section 2 W-4 appears to only have a place to enter the entire SSN number, which is what I'm doing. I don't see any displayed digits. I don't seem to find it anywhere.
Hi there, corbettme.
Can you share a screenshot of the W4 window of your QuickBooks Online account? You can also follow the steps in this article to check what version you're using: Which Payroll Service Do I Have?.
If there's an existing SSN on file, only the last four digit is shown and not the entire digit. You need to remove it re-enter it. If you don't see anything in the field for Social Security Number, you just need to type in the entire information and click Done.
If you're still unable to update the information, follow the steps in the previous response on how to reach out to our Payroll Support Team. They can take a closer look at this to determine what's causing the issue.
