Good work for checking the items' costs, Cherylwupsllc. This QuickBooks unexpected behavior is often caused by corrupted data.

We'll run the verify/rebuild tool to detect the data damage. I'll show you how:

  1. Click File.
  2. Go to Utilities, then choose Verify Data.
  3. If QuickBooks detected no problems, there's no further action needed. If you receive a message, "Your data has lost integrity", the file is damaged. Just continue to Rebuild Data to correct the problem.
  4. When you Rebuild Data, you'll receive a message to back up your company file, just click OK. The utility starts as soon as the back up is finished.
  5. Click OK when you get the message "Rebuild has completed".
  6. Run Verify Data again to check for remaining data damage.

Once done, create the inventory assembly item again.

Let me add the article on how you can track the products you build using inventory items.

You can keep us updated after trying these steps. Just leave a comment and we'll answer you as soon as we can.

Hi Umair21,

Some users recommended that rebuilding data thrice fixes data damage. If the steps provided above didn’t work for the first time, you may try to verify/rebuild data again. If the error still exists, you can contact for additional support. Follow the steps below:

  1. Go to Help.
  2. Select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  3. Click Contact us. Choose Message Us or Call me back.

Our representatives can provide additional troubleshooting and can run some diagnosis to identify this unexpected behavior.

Same here.  Took over 2.5 hours to do the re-build and the problem still exists!

I can show you another way to fix this error when building assembly by repairing QuickBooks Desktop. To start, let's make sure to secure a back up your company file in case there is a need to retrieve them. Then, you can follow the steps below:

  1. Restart your computer so there will be no other programs that will be affected.
  2. Open the Windows Start menu, then select Control Panel.
  3. Choose Programs and Features then Uninstall a Program.
  4. Select QuickBooks from the list of Programs, then Uninstall/Change.
  5. Click Continue, or Next.
  6. Choose Repair, then Next.

Once done, I recommend updating your QuickBooks to the latest release to make sure you have the most recent fixes and security updates within the system. For your guide on how to run the repair tool in QuickBooks Desktop, you can have this article handy: Repair your QuickBooks Desktop for Windows.

If the issue persists, you can contact our QuickBooks Care Support. They can pull up your account in a secure environment and help take a deeper investigation on what's causing this issue when trying to build an assembly. Here's how:

  1. Click Help at the top menu and select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  2. In the Have a Question? window, enter a topic something about building assembly.
  3. Click Contact us.

Please know that you're always welcome to post if you have any other concerns. Wishing you and your business continued success.
