Automatically assigned journal entries repeating

I use Quickbooks Premier Plus 2020 desktop.  On my company preferences, I have selected automatically assign general journal entry numbers.  I have never had a problem until this month when the numbers started repeating the same numbers as was assigned in January.  I don't understand how this can happen.  Any thoughts or solutions?

Automatically assigned journal entries repeating

Hi there, djbbeary.

Welcome back to the QuickBooks Community. I'll share troubleshooting steps to ensure QuickBooks will assign the journal entry numbers seamlessly.

Since the said option is now working inaccurately, data damage might be the reason why the numbers started repeating the same numbers. With this, I recommend running the Verify/Rebuild Utility tool to check and fix any issues in the company file. Before doing so, make sure to create a backup to avoid any accidental data loss.

Here's how to Verify:

  1. Under the File menu, choose Utilities.
  2. Select Verify Data.
  3. Hit OK when you see the message QuickBooks detected no problem with your data.
  4. If Verify finds an issue with your data, you will be prompted to Rebuild Now or View Errors.

Here's how to Rebuild:

  1. From the File menu, select Utilities.
  2.  Choose Rebuild Data.
  3. Select OK if you receive a prompt to back up your company file.
  4. Select Close or View Results when you get the message Rebuild has completed and proceed with the next step.

Once done, I reccomend creating a dummy journal entry and manually enter the transaction no. Then, you'll have to delete it after saving it. This is to ensure that after verifying/rebuilding your company file, the data refresh its default state. You can click this article to see the detailed steps on how to perform the process: Create a journal entry in QuickBooks Desktop for Windows or Mac.

Automatically assigned journal entries repeating

Thank you very much.  Even though there were no issues found when I did the verify, I ran the rebuild anyway.  I created a dummy general journal entry and everything is back to normal.
