I am new to using QBO and still in the setup/testing phase. I have assigned a "customer type" to each of my customers and also have some test projects set up for each customer. I have created several test invoices for each of the projects and when I run a sales by client type report, instead of showing me the sales by client type, all of the invoices are grouped under "Not Specified." I then created another invoice and instead of choosing a customer/project I just assigned the general customer to that invoice. That particular invoice appeared with the correct customer type on the report.
If I want to utilize projects (and track sales by customer/project) will I also be able to utilize the sale by customer type report? Could someone please advise on the steps to take so that the invoices for a customer/project are still tagged with the customer type from the customer record?

Yes, you can run and track sales by customer and customer type report. You'll need to run Sales by Customer Detail report and toggle it to Customer type.

Thanks for the suggestion but I'm running into the same issue with this report. For the transactions where I selected a customer/project the customer type is not being recognized for reporting purposes. Whereas for the transaction where I just selected a customer (and did not select a corresponding project) the customer type is being recognized in the report. I've included a attachment which shows both customer set ups (where I selected the customer type), the list of invoices (where I have selected customer/project for a few and just customer for one) and the resulting report (where only the invoice that had just customer selected was correctly showing with their type.)

Thanks for following the suggestion provided by my colleague and sharing with us its result. I can provide clarifications on why the customer type is not recognized in the report.
QuickBooks uses a concept called 'Source' and 'Targets' to build transactions and data when running reports. The target for the Sales by Customer Detail is the customer type and the source will depend on customer information (assigned with customer type or not).
We’ll have to open two reports to view the information you need. To track your projects’ sales, let’s run the Project and Profitability Report.
Here’s how:
In regard to the customer type and the transactions associated with it, you can continue running the Sales and Customer Report. This way, you can track the sales for the customer type and invoices.

Thanks again for the suggestion but this still does not achieve what I am looking for. I have transactions associated with a customer and more specifically a project for that customer. Transactions of this nature appear as "not specified" when I run a report for customer type- even though the customer for that project does have a type assigned to it.
Right now, I am not interested in looking at the sales/expenses by project (though good to know that this report exists.) I am interested in sales by customer type and its frustrating that there is a report for this, yet the info is not shown correctly if I have an invoice that is linked to a customer/project. I can only see the customer type if the invoice is just linked to a customer (and not the actual project.)
My backup to support this question is attached again. I am not sure how to better explain what I am looking for, hopefully this is more clear.

The reason why the projects show unspecified when running the Sales by Client/Customer report because we aren't able to select a customer type when creating the projects. Only when entering customers' information.
At this time, you can follow the suggested steps provided by Rasa-LilaM above to get the information you need.

thank you. but please explain to me...if a project is linked to a customer and that customer has a customer type selected, then why wouldn't the sales by customer type report pull that info? just seems like its disjointed.
the project profitability report is fine if I wanted to just look at one project, but I am interested in sales by customer type, which doesn't seem like I'm able to utilize if I'm recording all transactions on a project level. is there something I'm missing?

The Sales by Customer Type Detail report will only show customers associated with a customer type. As mentioned by my peer Rasa-LilaM, the target of the Sales by Customer Type Detail report is the customer type.
As a workaround, you can consider running the Project profitability report to see all transactions on a specific project. I understand that you'll have to run this report one at a time. However, this will be the best option we can consider right now.

Yes, this is what I'm confused by- if a project is linked to a customer, and that customer has a customer type associated with it, I'm not understanding why transactions for that customer/project would appear with no customer type specified in the report.
The profitability report by project doesn't help me. If I'm trying to see sales by customer type I ideally would want one report (sales by customer type) to show me everything sorted by customer type. Running a report for every single project I have in Quickbooks doesn't seem like an efficient use of my time.

As of now, this is how QuickBooks works for customers and jobs in QuickBooks Online. I would feel the same way in your situation and understand the importance of being able to show the customer type for projects when running the Sales by Customer Detail report as running the Project profitability report can be time-consuming though. Thanks for the input everyone. I have alternatively found that using the "class" feature allows me to tag/view my sales by class, which achieves the same thing I was looking for by tagging the customer with a type.

I was surprised to find that I can't simply create any report I wish to, and basically only able to customize certain fields. And those customizations change depending on the report you choose from.
I need a Sales by Customer Type Summary Report.. not the Detail. Can we get that going please?

I know how important for you to generate a report that will give the info you need. I'll send this feedback to our product engineers so it will be added in the future enhancements. As a workaround, you can export the Sales by Customer Type Detail report to Excel. From there, remove other info to format things just the way you want them.

That's unfortunate. Exporting to an excel isn't an option because it would require me to create a Month column after every export so that I can create a pivot table, and in order to do that I would need to use the Month function pulling the date from the Date field, but the date field gets exported as a text not a date, so the Month function doesn't read it like a date.
This basically means I would have to manipulate each row's date field to become a proper date field to enable me access to the Month function. Exporting isn't a workable solution for me unfortunately.
Being able to see my revenue segmented by customer type across a specific period of time feels like a basic view. (eg. how much money am I making from stores vs direct over the past 9 months?) I understand there is only so many things a company can do. How much Intuit resources are required to offer a summary version? I think it's safe to assume that if there's a need for a detailed view, there's always a need for the same summary view. I can't imagine I'm the only one who wants this view. Is this something that can be added to the roadmap?
Thanks for mentioning that the class will work for you. Unfortunately, that means you have to manually tag every transaction with the class instead of it simply tagging the record with the type that is in the customer master data as you have been explaining to QBO support.
I need reports based on customer type as well. And consistency in reports when projects are used. Why do some reports omit data when a project is on the record? I see some benefits in using projects vs sub-customers, but not if I cannot be certain to get ALL of my data when running reports. QBO, you can do better!
