Desktop vs QBO

I have a small bookkeeping practice, and have been utilizing the the 5/$5 month wholesale QBO for my equally small Clients.  At $5/month I can easily absorb the cost.  Unfortunately the promo is ending and the price increasing 5 fold per client.  Far too much for me to absorb.  Therefore, I've been transitioning client billing over to them before I get hit with the increase.

One of Client has been a desktop QB user, but has allowed me to set up their second company under my QBO umbrella.  They love it - BUT now it's going to cost them $70/month to maintain the features they've come to enjoy (Class tracking/Budgets) but are not available in the more reasonably priced QBO versions.

Should I advise them to switch back to Desktop?  Their 2017 version of the QBDT is about to sunset.  However, the cost of replacement seems much less than $70/month.  Which QBDT version will provide Class and Budgets?

Thank you!

I agreed to john-pero. Ask your client to explore trial license of Pro 2020

https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/new-subscriptions/download-a-trial-of-quickbooks-d...

They may purchase the license directly to Intuit for $300 (i.e 1 user) or thru a partner for around $200 or less. To convert their data from QBO, utilize a free converter tool (for now)

https://www.exportmybooks.com/

And for yourself, consider to have a QBD 2020 Premier Accountant edition. If you are not a ProAdvisor yet, consider purchasing a one-time license thru a partner, Company only offers the subscription one.

Desktop vs QBO

Even though price goes up you still get  a discount that if passed on to your clients makes their use of QBO through you a little more palatable. Would they be willing to pay you 40 when it costs you 35 or less?

All versions of desktop offer budget. Premier and Enterprise also offer forecasting. Street price of QBDT Pro is $200. Even at promo intro pricing an online Plus will cost that much in just 5-6 months and the $200 investment in desktop is good for 3 years. $6/month or $70/month.if they do not need multiple user or access from their phone just look at the math.

I would NEVER advise ANYONE to go to QB Online!! We switched from Desktop to Online on our accountant's recommendation and he loves it -- meanwhile, we've taken the first two months of 2022 to have to redo everything that was in Desktop at the end of the year because Online won't import it. I'm spending all my time rewriting estimates and invoices, and creating templates that don't have anywhere near the features that Desktop did. Every time I ask for help, I run up against 'oh, we eliminated that in the Online version - but isn't Online GREAT?!?!" No, no it isn't. I don't mind change but I do mind less functionality and a waste of time.

@AnotherDisgustedUser

You may have 2 options:

1. Find a new accountant who loves QB Desktop than QB Online.

2. Purchase a 3rd party service to convert your data from QB Desktop to QB Online including certain data (e.g attachments, estimates, multi currency)

We are facing similar dilema.  We have QB Premier Contractor 2020.  It has become glitchy and error ridden.  When we contact support they push the online version.  Do you mind sharing what processes you lost specifically by going to QB online ?

Thanks

@jenndery

What kind of glitch and error did you encounter? How big is your file size?

Desktop vs QBO

From QBDT to QBO we lost the ability to easily track multiple work comp class codes per employee per pay period.  QBO is nothing like desktop,  I used QB Desktop for over 20 years and never had to call support to figure out how to track a cost based on shipping address or WC class codes.  I have been using QBO for three weeks and have called support five times for about an hour each time.  I don’t expect QBO support to correct any of these issues.
