Does the new update (Quickbooks Plus) no longer have a way to merge accounts in the chart of accounts?

I have Quickbooks Plus, and the newest update has a lot of changes that I'm still discovering. I had an issue earlier today that I thought was resolved, only to find a new issue.

I recently changed the name of our bank account in the chart of accounts. I noticed today that QB recreated the account with the old name (without the account number), and the last payroll tax payment went to it. It's the only transaction in that account. I realized I may need to reselect the account in Payroll Settings > Accounting, but I got an error: "Failed to load chart of accounts data." I was able to get that fixed through a QB support chat, but the tax payment still remained in the wrong account. The solution was to merge the 2 accounts. The support rep asked if I needed help, and I declined, since I have successfully merged accounts numerous times. So, I closed the chat.

I went to the chart of accounts, looked at the account I want to keep and took a screenshot of the settings.

Then I went to the account I want to merge and entered the exact same name and account/detail types. I hit "save" and got this error: "Another account is already using this name. Please use a different name."

There is no longer an option to merge them.

Is there a new way to merge them? All of the help articles on merging accounts describe the way I described above.

(On a side note, I do like the new look of the "Edit account" option and the addition of the balance sheet at the bottom.)

Thank you for laying out the details of your concern, @bookish_29.

Please know that this isn't the experience we want you to have. I'm here to shed some light on your concern about merging accounts in QuickBooks Online.

To begin with, let's try logging in to your QBO account using a private window. Thus, there are times when too much historical data from the browser causes discrepancies that affect the view and performance of your QuickBooks.

To help us determine if this is a browser-related issue, feel free to use either of these keyboard shortcuts to open an incognito window depending on your browser:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Safari 11 or newer: ⌘ + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Microsoft Edge: Ctrl + Shift + P

If it works, you can go back to your original browser and clear its cache to start fresh. You can also use another supported and up-to-date browser to narrow down the results.

Moreover, please ensure that you save the accounts under the same account type and tax form section (detail type). This way, you can combine two different accounts.

You can check this article for the detailed steps and information: Merge duplicate accounts, customers, and vendors in QuickBooks Online.

Please let me know if you have other concerns with merging accounts in your chart of accounts. Tag me in your reply, and I'll sprint back into action. Have a good one, and keep safe!

Thank you for your response @Carneil_C

I tried it in a private browser, and it still does not give an option to merge. I attached a screenshot.

The one on the left is the correct account I want to keep. The one on the right is the one I need to merge into the other one. As you can see, the account types are the same, and I entered the account name exactly as the one on the left. (I tried it with and without the account number and the result is the same.) When I click "save" I get the message you see at the top of the one on the right.
