You can add a service item for the gratuity/tip and include it on the invoice. Before doing so, let's make sure to turn on the feature, so we can select the Undistributed Tips account when you set up the item.
Here's how:
Please see this sample screenshot for reference:
Once done, let's add the service item by following these steps:
Then, create an invoice and add the service item from the Product/Service column.
On the other hand, a Tip field will be added on the sales receipt. You can check this article for more details: Add tips to sales receipts.
Let me know in the comments if you have more questions related to tips. I'm just a few clicks away. Take care.
If you follow the intuit instructions, that is NOT an option, that is hard wired into the invoice
Short answer is you can NOT list anything as an option for the customer to select

I'm here to share some insights about adding gratuity to an invoice in QuickBooks Online (QBO), zsazsa.
The option to automatically add the gratuity on the email invoice and the card reader is unavailable. We can only use the Tip tracking feature that is available in sales receipts or add a separate service item for tips on the invoice as a workaround.
Just follow the steps provided by my colleague RenjolynC. You can learn additional details about adding a separate line item in this link.
I'm also including these articles about recording tips/gratuities in QBO:
Finding new ways to adapt to our customers’ needs is how QBO gets even better. I'd recommend visiting our QuickBooks Blog to check with the updates and newly released features of the product.

How can we request the automatic option for tipping feature for quickbooks online? This is a basic feature, I switched to quickbooks from Paypal and I use to get a substantial amount of tips and now am not getting any. I don't want to switch back to paypal or another service...please help.
It seems this is a duplicate post, johntarantino1.
Let me route you to the original post answered by my colleague. Here's the link above:

Please let me know if you have other questions in QuickBooks. I'll be here to extend a hand. Have a great day!
This is a HUGE flaw. I just switched from PayPal and lost a significant revenue source since I cannot tell a customer to change the amount if they want to add a tip. Now I have to figure out how to migrate everything I just did back to PayPal ... unless this can be added SOON? Thanks!
For all the businesses that are now switching to an online platform this is a must-have. Many people in hospitality and service related businesses have now been forced to online sales and gratuities make up a large portion of their income. Since Quickbooks charges a % on the transaction size it seems like a no-brainer. Please help out by adding a feature that allows our clients to add a gratuity of their own choosing. It would help a lot of us out right now.
Has this changed any since mid-2020...? I am not seeing a way to show a customer-facing line to add their own tip amount on an invoice and this is costing me serious money!! I can't stick with QB if this is really how it has to be...
Thank you for joining this thread, @CtrlAltNoot.
Currently, the option to add gratuity (tips) is only available on the sales receipts forms. To add this to your invoices, you can follow the recommended workaround by my colleague, RenjolynC.
I also encourage you to visit our QuickBooks Blog so you'll be updated on the latest product features and enhancements.
Also, QBO has several ready-made reports that you can access to view your customer information and their transactions. Just simply go to the Reports tab and type the "customer" keyword and click whichever customer report you'd like to open.
I'm just one click away if you need a hand with managing your invoices in QBO. Have a good one.
This is not an option on the online version if we click the gear icon go to account and settings collect sales pull up the sales and contact information it does have a spot to click on that says tips but it does not pull any information as to where to put the tips to. I received the quickbooks to go Payment reader because it specifically said on there that it shows tip optionsBut when I click on the persons invoice for them to pay it does not show the tip options could someone please assist
Allow me to step in and share additional information about adding a gratuity, FusionMoving.
The gratuity is added as a field on the Sales receipt form, not on invoices. You can use this entry for customers who pay on the spot.
See the attached screenshot below for your visual guide.
Please refer to this link for additional information about paying out tips to employees: Share tips with your team. It includes the process of giving tips before depositing the final amount to the employees' bank account.
Let me know if there's anything else you need about adding a gratuity. I'm always around to help you.
As stated previously, the inability for a customer to designate a tip amount when paying an invoice is unacceptable. Service industry professionals rely on tips for their income. This needs to be rectified ASAP.
We absolutely take suggestion, handymanmd911-gm.
There's no specific time frame when the tips will be added to the invoice. At this time, you can only add tips on the sales receipt form.
Please know that our developers are constantly working and considering new functions to be added to the system. This way, we will be able to meet our customers' needs and demands.

I’m glad y’all are working hard, tips are a big thing in most businesses that are using QB. Please add very soon, I see that the thread has people from over a year ago, and it’s still a problem. :(
I know that every company has unique needs, Atoro13.
I can see the importance of this feature to your business. Adding tips or gratitude to invoices is currently unavailable in QuickBooks. I'll personally share your feedback with our engineering team so they can review and include this in future product updates. Also, you can submit a product suggestion inside your QuickBooks Online account. This way, you'll be added to the list of users requesting this option. I'll show you how.
You can track feature requests through the QuickBooks Online Feature Requests website.
In addition, I've got this article for your future reference: Record invoice payments in QuickBooks Online. Here you can find the steps to successfully record your sales transactions.

Please stop providing the same instructions to add to a sales receipt, that isn’t what we are asking for. We need a tips options on an invoice (the method we use to email our customers for online payment). We are asking that you listen to our request and put that request in the queue. I understand this isn’t a bug or something broken, it is simply a feature you haven’t put time into yet. This is a huge opportunity for small businesses who want to use Quickbooks for managing their finances and interacting with customers remotely (not face to face sales receipts, ah we are still dealing with Covid). All other payment channels have this and you are falling behind and at risk of losing more of us. Please indicate to us if this is in queue. Directing us to the blog gets us basically no-place on this topic. I would love to join a forum or user group to further discuss or provide an official written change order request for this feature. Is that possible? This is submitted by a professional IT Project Manager who understands feature requests for software. I do believe this feature would increase your revenue substantially.

2022 and still not an option. Square offers the same transaction fees and tip options. QB is way behind on this
We heard your feedback, @CynOnDeck.
I understand that some other accounting software, such as Square, already had an option to add tips on an invoice. Please know that all suggestions are being considered by our product engineers based on the volume of requests and their influence on the user interface before they are implemented.
At this time, you can consider following the steps shared by my colleague RenjolynC above as an alternative. Also, if you haven't yet, I suggest submitting feedback directly to our product engineers. This way, they can count the request and consider adding the option in the future update. To submit feedback, you can go to the Gear icon and select Feedback. Then, enter your suggestion and click Submit.
You may also want to view the status of your sales transactions in your QuickBooks Online. You can go to the Sales menu and select All Sales.
We're always here to listen if you have concerns regarding other features. You're welcome to post again or leave a reply below.
I swear this was an option a month or two ago in QBO and now it's gone??? My customers were adding tips and now.....
