How do i resort the chart of accounts in QBO

We can sort the Chart of Accounts using the following column headers:

• Number
• Name
• Type
• Currency
• QuickBooks Balance

Here are the detailed steps to do this:

1. Click Accounting on the left menu and go to the Chart of Accounts tab.
2. Click one of the column headers (mentioned above) to sort the list.

So my custom chart of accounts was brought in but the numbers are not sorting like I was used to in the desktop version.  For example account 1000 is following by 11000 instead of 2000, 3000, etc.  How do I change that?

When you import data from charts of accounts using CSV or Excel, you'll need to edit the numbers first before importing in QBO to show the correct account numbers.

I sorted by Number.  How do I get it back to Cash  on top etc.

For instance, GL account number 299999 - an Other Current Liability is supposed to be above 220000 - a Long Term Liability.

I had each account where I wanted it then I sorted by number how do I get it back to the correct sorting?

If you have sorted the Chart of Accounts using the Filter option, you can use the Reset feature to bring back the old filter or settings before you sorted the numbers.

To do this, follow the steps below:

1. Go to Accounting and choose Chart of Accounts.
2. From there select the account and click Account history.
3. Click the Filter icon drop-down.
4. Hit the Reset button.

Has anyone been able to find the answer to this? The suggestions provided so far seem to miss the point. In QB desktop version, there is an option to "Re-sort List" under the View tab (I believe). This re-sorts the COA based on standard accounting order, which is assets on top, then liabilities, equity, income, expenses, other income/expenses etc. and in order of liquidity within each (short term first, then long term). The closest functionality to this I could find was to sort the COA by TYPE. However, this still left some of my accounts out of order. i It seems that in QBO, if you sort the account by any criteria you are then unable to re-sort it back to the original order unless you use account numbers (in some special way I haven't yet figured out).

I believe you're right. The functionality to sort the accounts in QuickBooks Online is by clicking the header columns for the following:

• Number
• Name
• Type
• Currency
• QuickBooks Balance

On the other hand, QuickBooks Desktop has different features in terms of sorting COA due to its complexity. While QuickBooks Online is unable to sort the account by any criteria, you're correct that using account numbers can help re-sort it back.

I use account numbers in my chart of accounts.  I have them mostly sorted to follow along w the account type category in the COA.  How do I get my COA to display in account number order every time I click on COA?  It always defaults back to account type order.  Can I change this setting to display in account number order.  It is frustrating to continually resort the COA when I make an entry or have to move between accounts. Yes. The system arranges your accounts based on their Account Type. The good news is that you can select the arrow menu beside Number to rearrange them by account numbers.
