How do you insert a new line into an existing invoice?

An invoice is a final sale and you should not be adding to it, but if you must, just use the next line

Thanks for joining the Community, smconry-yahoo-co.

You can add new line items to existing invoices by going to their records, then editing them.

Here's how:

  1. In your left navigation bar, go to Sales, then Invoices.
  2. Find and click the one you need to edit.
  3. Hit Edit invoice.
  4. Select Add lines.

I've additionally included a detailed resource about working with invoices that may come in handy moving forward: Create invoices

How do you insert a new line into an existing invoice?

I am using Quickbooks Online and it did not have an button to add lines.  I need to insert lines above prior entries.  How may I do it?

How do you insert a new line into an existing invoice?

I'm here to ensure you can add new line items to your invoices in QuickBooks Online (QBO), @guessfirm

To insert a line from your prior items, you need to click on the section where you want to insert the additional line. From there, you'll see the green plus (+) button to insert a row above. Hovering over the 9-dot square only rearranges the lines if you need to. See the screenshot below for a visual process.

Moreover, if you're unable to do the process above and don't have the Add lines button below, your browser might be causing the issue. With this, I recommend signing into your QuickBooks Online account through a private or incognito window. This approach ensures that QBO pages fetch current information from Intuit's server, avoiding any dependency on potentially flawed, outdated, or corrupted cached data. You can use these keyboard shortcuts to save time:

  • Safari: Command + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: CTRL + Shift + P
  • Google Chrome: CTRL + Shift + N
  • Microsoft Edge: CTRL + Shift + N

After signing in, please go to the invoice page and see if you can already add lines to it. If it works, go back to your regular browser and clear its cache. If not, consider using a different browser to determine if the problem is specific to the one you are currently using.

In addition, you may visit this article to learn how to personalize and add specific info to your sales forms: Customize invoices, estimates, and sales receipts in QuickBooks Online.

How do you insert a new line into an existing invoice?

So I tried opening an icognito page and logged in from there and I still couldn't add a line.  I tried Firefox and it's still not working.  Any other ideas?

Thank you!

How do you insert a new line into an existing invoice?

I appreciate the effort that you've made so far, @HTM 2021. Let me add more information on how you can add line items to the invoice.

If you're using the old invoice format, the steps provided by my colleague Nicole_N will work. However, if you want to add a line item using the new invoice layout, the steps above won't work for you. See the steps below to add lines using the new design.

  1. Open the invoice you want to modify or click the +New button and select Invoice to create.
  2. From the Invoice page, click the Add Product or Service tab.
  3. You can also drag the Six dots icon to insert the line item you've added.
  4. Enter all the needed details on the invoice.
  5. Then, click Save.

If you're still unable to add line items with both the old and the new layout with all the troubleshooting steps you've done, I suggest contacting our Technical Support Team. That way, they can further investigate the issue. Also, they have the necessary tools to securely check your account set up via screen-sharing session and have the ability to create a ticket for investigation if needed.
