Is there a way to batch import journal entries?

Hello! I am transitioning into QBO, importing historical transactions, and I would like to import historical journal entries as csv files. I have followed the instructions on this page about how to import journal entries into QBO:

https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-uk/help-article/import-export-files/import-journal-en...

However, on the Import Data screen, Journal Entries is not an option. (I see Bank Data, Customers, Vendors, Chart of Accounts, Products and Services, and Invoices.)

Can you provide advice? Our subscription is QBO Advanced. I have turned off account number tracking.

Thank you!

Is there a way to batch import journal entries?

I know it's important to import the journal entries, @beechsidekathryn. I'm here to share some insights about this.

There are several methods to import bulk transactions in QuickBooks Online (QBO). One way is through an Excel CSV file that can only accommodate deposits, checks, and payments.

Depending on the QuickBooks version being used in your area, the process of importing journal entries may vary. The instructions provided in the given link are specifically for QBO UK versions.

For QBO US, you may consider using a third-party tool to import your journal entries. You can check for supported apps from the Apps menu or through this link: Find the right apps for your business. Here are the steps if you wish to browse for a third-party app:

  1. Access your QuickBooks Online company.
  2. On the left navigational bar, go to the Apps tab.
  3. In the search bar, type "Importer" as your keyword.
  4. Once you find the app that best suits your business needs, click the app.
  5. Click the Get app now button.

To learn more about importing transactions to QuickBooks, you may also read the details from this article: Import bank transactions in batches.

I understand that importing journal entries would be helpful not just for you but for others as well. Please know that our engineers are continuously working to improve QuickBooks and provide the best possible experience for all users. With any luck, this feature will be available in upcoming updates.

I recommend sending this request straight to our product engineers through feedback consideration for software updates. QuickBooks Online is constantly evolving and adding features based largely on the suggestions of users, like yourself.

Alternatively, you can send feedback to them by clicking the Gear icon, then selecting Feedback.

Additionally, I've included an article that'll help you stay informed about importing data to QuickBooks Online: What Information Can I Import?

If I can be of help while working with journal entries in QuickBooks, please let me know. I'll be here to help. Have a good one!

Is there a way to batch import journal entries?

@beechsidekathryn

The feature is not available on QBO US version. You can prepare JE data with the following template

RefNumberTxnDatePrivateNoteIsAdjustmentCurrencyExchangeRateAccountLineAmountLineDescEntityClassLocation
10101/10/2020Wire TransferFALSE  Savings-50.00Credit Savings
10101/10/2020Wire TransferFALSE  Checking50.00Debit Checking
10201/10/2020Wire TransferFALSE  Savings200.00Debit Savings
10201/10/2020Wire TransferFALSE  Checking-200.00Credit Checking

then use an importer tool to proceed.

Yes, another weakness of QBO!  An accounting application that does not allow for importing any kind of journal entry but restricts to only three types of transactions!  You cannot import a csv as a journal entry, as you've discovered.  I use Saasant (3rd party) and have been satisfied with it.  In the US the cost is $10/mo.

Is there a way to batch import journal entries?

Hi @beechsidekathryn

In the meantime until QuickBooks Online adds the import journal entries you could look at Axis Online that you can use to import journal entries in batch from Text, Excel or even IIF files.

It has a Free level so you can test out with your own data.
