When we put in a bill or have a credit card purchase/charge, we use ITEMS. We assign that item to a Customer Job.
I am looking for a report that will show all bills or credit card purchases/charges and the "Customer Job" it is assigned to..even if it is blank.
We are trying to show all bills or credit card purchases/charges that are NOT assigned to a "Customer Job" can't seem to find one. Example: see attached pic where "Customer Job" is blank.
Note: I have tried the "Unbilled Costs by Job", doesn't show.
We use QuickBooks Pro 2016.
Hey there, Jmcplumbing.
Our reports are transaction based, not item based. For now, we're unable to pull up a report showing the customer:job assigned to a specific item.
You can send feedback directly to our software engineers. This is the best way for your voices to be heard. This way, we'll know your ideas and suggestions. You can do that by going to Help, choosing Send Feedback Online, then clicking Product Suggestion.

You stated you have Pro. That is entry level.
What you want is Premier, installed as the Contractor Edition. It has Job reports, including "Expenses not Assigned to Jobs."
Your file will move to Premier just fine.
Your QB 2016 reaches end of life May 2019. QB 2019 has already been out for 6 months. This is a Great Reason, and the right time, to Update and Upgrade to the better tools that will be meaningful to you.
Otherwise, find someone with the Contractor Reports. They can Export it to you, and you can Import it and use it from the Memorized Reports list.
I have a similar questions. I amusing QB desktop Premier Non Profit 2016
I meet with the Director each month to review finances. Upon reviewing credit card expenses, I was asked to create a report that shows the customer:job for each cc expense. I do not enter cc expenses as "items" as described above, instead I enter them through Banking > enter cc charges. I add details for customer:job and class for every item so I believe there is a connection and a report should be possible, but I can't make it happen. Pulling a report for previous months reconciliation does not include customer:job nor is it an option in the customization menu. Class is an option, and I do enter class, but even if I add it to the report, it does not show up on the report (weird since it is entered). I have poked around in many reports to try to view all cc expenses showing allocated Customer:job but can't find anything that allows this (even using modification). I'm wondering if there is something I am missing. What report WOULD allow customization to add customer:job to cc expenses? Again, I am looking for a way to add customer; job to a report on credit card expenses (so that I can see which cc expenses are being reimbursed through specific grant funds that have been recorded under specific customer:jobs). Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Hello there, @LindaMCA.
Good to see you here in the QuickBooks Community. I'm here to help guide you on how to pull up the report you need in QuickBooks Desktop.
You can pull up the Custom Transaction Detail Report and customize it to show the Customer:Job information for each credit card expense. Let me walk you through the steps:
Also, you can check this article on how to customize reports in QuickBooks Desktop for additional reference.
That should do it! Feel free to leave a comment below if you have additional questions about the Custom Transaction Detail Report. I'd be happy to answer them for you.
JanyRoseB,
Thank you for your quick reply. The report you suggested is indeed a very detailed report and your steps were easy to follow. However, for some reason, the "Name" column does not always show the "customer:job" info. I can't see any reason why some have Customer:Job in Name field and others have name of vendor. Everything else about the entries are the same . Thoughts?
JanyRoseB
DETAIL: Once the entry reconciles/clears, it no long shows the customer:job info in the name column!! So would have to run this report once all monthly entries are in but BEFORE I actually reconcile!
FYI, my pop up box for the customization is a little different than yours. I do not have an option for "Credit Card Expenses" but do have CC Liability account (which is the account/register where all the cc expenses go). I presumed you meant that one.
Thanks for getting back to us, @LindaMCA.
Let's perform some troubleshooting steps so we can get the customer:job information appears permanently in the Name field.
Transaction Detail report should show the customer:job information. Since customer:job is intermittently showing in the Name field, I recommend running the Verify and Rebuild Utility tool.
To run Verify Data utility:
Here’s how to run the Rebuild utility:
For additional troubleshooting steps, please refer to this article: Resolve Data Damage on your Company File.
After verifying and rebuilding the data, you can pull up the report again to double check.

I do the book keeping for a consultant who invoices all his travel expenses to his clients. I am not able to locate a report that will show me if any credit card transaction have NOT BEEN ASSIGNED to a customer job. Years ago it was so easy as I assigned the customer job directly under bank feeds page but then it was changed. Now I have to go into the credit card leger and assign the job number. It's the only place I can locate a field. This is a cause for concern as I don't know if I have every credit card transaction assigned to a job. Please help. I figured at least a report would highlight any charges I may not have assigned.
Hello lblackwell2004,
The option to pull up a report that will display all the credit card transactions that have not assigned to a customer: job isn’t available. Rest assured, I’ll personally share this idea with our developers. They'll be reviewing the idea of including this type of report and may be added to our future updates.
The steps you’ve been doing (which is to run a credit card ledger) is our workaround. Then, customize and filter the needed details.
Please let me know if you have additional details. I'll make sure to add them to the list.
I share the frustration other posters have reported with how Quickbooks reporting handles the customer:job field in the detail lines. A credit card charge transaction can show a blank customer:job field on the entry screen, but if you run the transaction journal for that same charge, Quickbooks shows the purchased from name as the customer, so it is as though I bought something from say Home Depot and then immediately sold it right back to them.
I have hundreds of credit card charges per month, so I thought I could same myself some time by getting QODBC because it has the option of looking for "Is Null" or blanks in the customer:job fields with the idea to figure out a routine to automatically insert a customer:job based on the purchased from or memo field for repetitive charges. I know next to nothing about SQL and how to join tables, but it appears QB is reporting the customer:job field to QODBC as being filled with the source name even when it is blank.
I know you can click back and forth endlessly through the credit card charges to see if the customer field is entered, but there are other areas of QB where the customer field is not mandatory (you can create a PO without entering it for one example), so there really needs to be an easier way to find these like the unassigned report for classes.
Hey did you ever figure out how to do this? I have the same issue now. 2023! QB is saying they cannot do it.
Hi, were you ever able to get a work around for this? I am having the same issue 3 years later. Thanks
