One of my clients has subscribed to the SIMPLE START version. Is there no P&L-detail report available?
Thank you
Greetings, @newyorktutor.
Yes, Profit and Loss Detail report is not available in QuickBooks Online Simple Start. However, you can generate and customize the Transactions List by Date report so it would display the information your client needs. Let me guide you on how to do it.
Also, you can view the General Ledger report. It displays a detailed report of all your income and expense transactions grouped per account. I've attached how it looks like for your reference.
You can browse the articles below to learn more detailed information about the available reports for your client's version of QuickBooks and on how to manage it:

Thanks for considering my issue, IamjuViel. I don't think it gives me what I need unless there is some way to sort by SPLIT or ACCOUNT. In other words, if the client has $500 in marketing expenses which would show up in the P&L Summary, I would like a companion report listing the individual transactions that comprise the $500.
So I guess my follow-up question is, can I tailor the TRANSACTION LIST or GENERAL LEDGER to group individual expenses so it would look more like a P&L detail report without using Excel. I'd like the client to see the total spent in a category along with the breakdown.
Appreciate your time
PS Also, I appreciate your confirming that the P&L detail is unavailable so I can stop hunting for it now.
Thanks for getting back to this thread, @ewyorktutor.
Allow me to provide you additional details on what reports you can use to view more details when pulling up transactions in QuickBooks Online Simple Start.
We can use the Transaction List by Vendor report to view the breakdown of transactions for each vendor. However, the option to view the total expenses you've made for each vendor is unavailable in this report.
Although, we can still export them to Excel and view their totals through it. All we need to do is to open this report by going to the Reports menu and look for Transaction List by Vendor report. Then, click on it to open and customize its date and details. Finally, select the Export button and customize it in Excel to view the total expenses.
In addition, you can memorize the reports that you've customized in QBO. This way, you can save their settings.

Raymond, I am trying to avoid manipulating data in Excel. With any luck, my client will upgrade his QBO version. Thanks anyway.
It makes no sense at all not to be able to generate a Profit and Loss Detail report. Is this feature disabled just to try and get folks to upgrade to a more expensive version? For almost any summary work we do on an account (like filing taxes etc), there needs to be this level of detail. Can you turn that feature on?
Thanks for following this thread, @toddjay1. I fully understand how much you need to generate the Profit and Loss Detail report in the Simple Start version of QuickBooks.
I'd be happy to share this suggestion with our development team. I know others would benefit as well. In the meantime, you can follow the workaround shared by my colleague, @IamjuViel on this thread.

I know your question was years ago but in case anyone else is frustrated that QuickBooks online Essentials does not have a canned P&L Detail report, here is a solution.
Do any of the online versions have a canned P&L detailed report?
Hello, tgberg68.
Yes, the online versions have the canned P&L detailed report. I'd like to elaborate more on the availability of the report below.
All versions except the Simple Start edition have the canned P&L detail report. I'll show some screenshots below to help us see what Profit and Loss reports are available on all versions.

I should also point out that certain reports or functions may not be present on lower versions.
