I cannot get any of my P&L reports to expand to show the detail behind the total. I've always been able to do this. I've checked my preferences to be sure "Collapse Transactions" is checked but it still does not work. Well, it worked once and then stopped again. Is there some bug I'm missing?
I'm running QB Desktop Pro 2019 and all updates are installed.
Thanks for any assistance or direction.
I appreciate the complete details you've shared, @Uboat.
Let's isolate this unexpected behavior when viewing your Proft and Loss report by running the Verify and Rebuild Data tools. This way, it'll resolve minor data issues within your company file.
Here's how to Verify:
If there is data damage in the file, run the Rebuild Data Utilities to correct the problem.
You can check this article for more detailed information on verifying and rebuild data in QuickBooks Desktop. Verify and Rebuild Data in QuickBooks Desktop.
Always feel free to leave a comment below if you have additional questions about generating reports in QuickBooks. I'd be glad to answer them for you.
If you're working with a summary P&L report (the standard P&L), then to see the detail behind a number, double click on it and a detail report will appear for just that amount. You can do this for account totals as well as subtotals and for entire sections of data like "Income".
Is this what you're looking for?
I have the exact issue that @Uboat has, I went through the Utilities, verify data and it came back fine.
I have Premier 2021, installed it Friday, the magnifying glass was there on the P&L and today, Monday it's gone. It went away on my Premier 2016 about 4months ago, which is why I thought I needed to upgrade to a later edition. So frustrated. I spent an hour and a half on the phone with support to be told near the end of the call that they could help me if I paid $199.95 for a "Plus" account. I just spent $650.00 on this program and I want it to work
That used to work, it stopped working
Hello @Pris_G,
Have you tried the suggestions shared by my colleague, @IamjuViel, and from one of our champions, @BigRedConsulting, above? Let me share other troubleshooting steps to help successfully help generate a transaction detail of your Profit and Loss report.
If you're still unable to open the Transaction Detail view of your Profit & Loss report within the totals after following the suggestions above, let's consider utilizing QuickBooks Tool Hub to continue our troubleshooting steps.
You can do so by following the steps outlined below:
Additionally, here's an article you can read to learn more about what the tool can do while utilizing it: Fix common problems and errors with the QuickBooks Desktop Tool Hub.

Hi @JonpriL . Yes I tried both suggestions from @IamjuViel and @BigRedConsulting
It was there after installing and the next day it was gone. Same thing happened to my 2016 Premier
Hi there, @Pris_G.
Thanks for following up with us and letting us know that the steps provided above aren't working for you. Rest assured, I'm here to help get to the bottom of why you're not able to see the magnifying glass to see the transaction detail.
To clarify, are you using dual monitors? In QuickBooks Desktop, the only way to have the magnifying glass feature work is if QuickBooks is on the main screen. Let's try dragging QuickBooks over to your main screen, if you have more than one, to see if that works for you.
That should do the trick! Please let me know if you don't have more than one monitor. I'll be here every step of the way. I appreciate all the time you've spent troubleshooting the program. It's customers like you that make this job great. Take care!
@Tori B Well thank you very much! Moving my Quick books to my main screen worked! What a relief.
Now my only problem is that my main screen is my Surface Pro so it's about 13 inches big and I can hardly read it. Ugh. Thanks again for your help and solution
Thanks for updating the Community, Pris_G.
I'm happy to hear my colleague's troubleshooting steps helped solve your problem.
If you're encountering display issues while using QuickBooks on the main screen, you can try changing your settings.
Here's how:
1. Close QuickBooks if it's currently open.
2. Locate your QuickBooks Desktop app icon and right-click it, then choose Open file location.
3. Perform a right-click on the QuickBooks.exe file. Pick Properties.
4. Go to your Compatibility tab. Tick the Disable display scaling on high DPI settings checkbox. You can also access your Change high DPI settings and turn on Override high DPI scaling behavior.
5. Select Apply, then OK.
Now you'll want to open QuickBooks and look for display problems. If everything looks good, you can get back to business.
In the event you're still nearly unable to read what's on your screen, you'll want to adjust view preferences:
1. Using the top navigation bar, go to Edit, then Preferences.
2. In your left menu list, hit Desktop View.
3. Open the My Preferences tab.
4. Select your One Window option and press OK.
After you've finished adjusting your preferences, close and reopen QuickBooks. Once the company file loads up, look for signs of display issues. If you still see any, you'll want to update Windows DPI settings.
