Prices not updating in recurring templates even after checking "update price" box and saving. What am I missing? I followed the directions to the letter.

Recurring transactions initially created before price update will not reflect the price update. If you read somewhere it would that article is wrong. If someone told you it would that person is wrong.

You will have to edit each recurring transaction to reflect the new price. One trick when you open the recurring template to view is add the same item as already on there and it should be at new price as of today, then delete the line with the old price

They are not wrong.

If you check the box that says " Update price in recurring templates, too" it updates price in recurring templates, too

What is the purpose of the box that says to update recurring transactions then? The directions on here say that the price update box is exactly for what I'm trying to do. Why bother having that checkbox if it's only going to work on new recurring transactions? I know that I can go to the template and re-add the item to get the new price. But I have 317 transactions that need to be updated and the entire POINT of the checkbox is to not have to touch every transaction for 10 items with new prices.

The problem is that is not happening. I'd like to hear from someone who has successfully used the feature. Have you used it before?

That was it. I cleared the cache and it works now. What's silly is that I'm using their "desktop app", which I know is just really a customized browser. But you'd think it would work a little better than this.

Spoke too soon. It seemed to work, but not really. I've tried reseting the cache and even all the data. Nothing seems to work. Not sure why it looked like it worked once. This is incredibly frustrating. I pay for the SaasAnt transaction import/export so I guess I'll have to export all of them, fix them in Excel, then re-import them and memorize them. Thank for nothing Intuit!!

So I guess I've found a bug. I moved from the desktop app to the online app. If I do what was mentioned above: create a new line item for the one I want, then delete the old one, it will update it every time in the future from the products and services menu item. But the ones that I've important and set up to use still won't update. It obviously doesn't tie the product in the line item of the template with the product in the product list (both of which were imported from the desktop app). Freaking lame. So hopefully my export/import trick will work and I'll "only" have to click  on each of the 317 transactions, then click on "make reoccurring, and fill out the recurrence info AGAIN, and save. I guess still easier than recreating all 10-15 line items in the 317 memorized transactions. Ugh.

Hello, treasurer24.

Are you referring to moving from the application to the web browser? If so, you don’t need to move any transactions since they both use the same file.
For now, you can report the bug you’ve found by contacting to our support team. They can also provide more troubleshooting and workaround for you.  Here’s how to reach them:

  1. Open your QuickBooks Online Company file.

No I'm not taking about going back and forth between the web and "desktop" app. The desktop app is basically a stripped down browser. I'm talking about migrating from QuickBooks pro 2016 desktop app to QuickBooks online. The migration does not preserve the foreign key relationship between sales items and invoices using those items.

Hi treasurer24,

If you're migrating invoices based on estimates or progress invoicing, this is not available. Some of the Desktop features are not supported in the Online version.

You were never very clear in this until this post. You referred to the full desktop software installed on your computer as the "desktop app" which it is far from and made it sound like you had problems with the online version and its so-called desktop "app"

Now it is clear that you were migrating an entire company from true desktop to online and are

  1. surprised that not everything migrates despite all the warnings in the instructions
  2. should have updated your needed updates (pricing in recurring transactions) in the desktop company file PRIOR to exporting to Online

Depending on how long you have been using ONline it may not be too late to properly update pricing in desktop and then import all over again

Prices not updating in recurring templates even after checking "update price" box and saving. What am I missing? I followed the directions to the letter.

1) I clarified it and others seemed to be able to figure out what I was talking about without making the assumption you did.

2) I'm not "surprised that not everything migrates despite all the warnings in the instructions" I am talking about ONE thing that is very specific. The items and prices DO migrate, as do the recurring transactions using those prices. There is no indication that the foreign key relationship between those things does not migrate.

3) "should have updated your needed updates (pricing in recurring transactions) in the desktop company file PRIOR to exporting to Online" Nope, that doesn't do any good. Updating the prices in the Quickbooks 2016 pro desktop application will NOT update recurring invoices in either the Quickbooks 2016 pro desktop application nor in the online version. Also the Quickbooks 2016 pro desktop application does NOT have the "update prices in future invoices" checkbox, so doing that would be a waste of time. Even if I went back and did that, checking the update box on a prices item would not apply it to those recurring invoices.

You're making assumptions and then getting passive-aggressive about it when YOU didn't understand what was being asked. I could update all the prices in the Quickbooks 2016 pro desktop application, then blow away my online company, and then re-migrate it, it will still not solve any problem that I've posed here.

Your last post was completely unhelpful.

Hi there, @treasurer24,

Thanks for keeping us updated about your recurring templates issue in QuickBooks. Allow me to step in for a moment and share some information on how to correct this.

If you're unable to update the prices for your recurring transactions after clearing your browser's cache, it's possible that there are corruptions on the templates. To get past this, you'll need to recreate and delete the problematic form.

To create a brand new template:

  1. Hit the Gear icon.
  2. Choose Recurring Transactions.
  3. Select New at the top-right section.
  4. Pick a Transaction Type then click OK.
  5. Enter the details of the recurring transaction then click Save template.

To delete the form:

  1. Click the Gear icon.
  2. Select Recurring Transactions.
  3. On the Action column, click the Arrow beside Edit.
  4. Click Delete.

To know more about fixing template related issues in QBO, please check out this article: How to handle a recurring transaction that did not run?

That should correct your pricing, @treasurer24. Please feel free to get in touch with me if you have any more concerns with QuickBooks. I'll be glad to answer them for you. Have a great day!

Sorry, but I don't consider this an answer. This isn't a matter a one corrupt template. This is 317 templates that are "corrupt" by your definition when migrated over. Yes, I am certainly aware that I can delete and recreate all 317 templates, but that is hardly a "solution". The only real solution is to go to edit each template, put a blank line under the bottom item, start typing the name of the item above it until it autocompletes, then click on that one and start typing the name of the item above that. That way I don't lose track of what items were in each of the 317 templates. When I get to the top of the list I end up with one duplicate at the top, that I delete. Now each item on that template has been recreated. Repeat 317 times. I'm sure I'll have a great day(s) at about 60 seconds per template...

It was only mid yesterday that you ever said you were using QB Desktop Pro 2016 and called it an "app" but before that said you were using the"stripped down browser based desktop app" which is far from the same thing. Admitedly the Online app for desktop use in lieu of browser has shortcomings, it is by design not always connected to your online company file,.

Somewhere in the mix the said you wer not even using Intuit methods of importing a company file from desktop to online but were paying a third party, SaasAnt, to import your templates that were created in 2016Pro. Just a thought - any chance there is a problem with that software and not QuickBooks?

This is a ridiculous post.

Why are you explaining with extreme detail, and with pictures and links, something that was not asked?  It makes the QuickBooks Team look stupid.  Just staying silent would be better

This is wrong. There are no shortcomings. It's the opposite.

The QBO desktop app is identical to the browser version, but it has some extra features.

Not only is it always connected , it never disconnects itself like the browser does

I'm tired of trying to make you understand what is perfectly obvious to others reading it. I used the QB import process to the letter according to QB. When it became apparent that I would have to recreated 317 invoices by hand I used the SaaSAnt plugin (that QB endorses and advertises on their page) to create the invoices instead. That has nothing to do with the issue I've been explaining.

I migrated from QB2016 desktop to QBO which is both in the browser and through their QBO desktop app. Why is this so hard for you to follow. You are terrible at technical support, please stop trying.

If you are using the app to import invoices, then there is no need to use the recurring invoices, right?

Please read the ENTIRE thread. I would rather NOT have to subscribe to an extra monthly service (SaaSAnt) that costs money just so I can then have to generate all those invoices every month,  then import them into QB. I did that this one time to see if it would overcome the issue with QB not keeping the mapping between item prices and recurring invoice items that were imported.

I ended up having to edit all 317 recurring transactions. Now they will auto generate every month AND when prices change I can update them in the price list and use the "update future..." checkbox. So far this has been the biggest issue with our migration to QB Online. Hopefully the only real issue we encounter.

This feature appears to be what my client would need for their recurring billing. Which edition of Quickbooks Online are you using to make sure that if I get my client to sign up for Quickbooks Online that this "Update Recurring Templates" checkbox is available?

Your answer would be appreciated.
