Quickbooks Pro 2016 Desktop - Not able to access my check register -HELP-

I have been using my Quickbooks Pro 2016 Desktop for years with no problems but I opened it the other day to access my check register and it does not give me an option to select the register for my account. When I select "Use Register" in the "Edit" menu, "Select Account", the only account that comes up is "Accounts receivable" and not my "Personal Checking" which is the check register I am wanting to make entries in. Can someone please help?? I've tried everything!!!

Let's go through some troubleshooting steps so you can get back to recording your transactions in QuickBooks Desktop, Jessica.

First, it would be helpful to know what steps you've performed to troubleshoot the matter through the comment section below. This will help me provide the most accurate resolution and information regarding the issue you're experiencing when choosing an account to record your transactions.

Then, let's check your Chart of Accounts (COA) to verify if your accounts are visible. To do this, you can follow the steps below:

  1. Navigate to Lists on the top menu.
  2. Select Chart of Accounts.
  3. Review your accounts.

Once you confirm that your accounts are complete in the COA and you're still unable to select the Personal Checking account, I suggest running the verify tool to check your company data.

Begin by closing all windows by heading to the Window menu and selecting Close All. Then, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to File on the top menu.
  2. Select Utilities.
  3. Press Verify Data.

If you see the message "Your data has lost integrity," you'll need to rebuild your data to fix the data damage that was found in the file.

For future reference, here's a guide on generating reports to display your data from your company file: Understand reports.

@Jessica Geyer

Run the Verify/Rebuild Data utility. Did you encounter any error message?

I clicked on “verify your data” In the utilities section. The response said “QuickBooks detected no problems with your data”. Why am I unable to access my check register?

That message confirms your file is structurally healthy, Doverson, and one of the possible reasons you cannot access the register can be due to your user permissions.

To begin, are there any specific error messages or codes that pop up when you try to open the register? Any additional details would be much appreciated.

If your data is in good standing, the software is following the security protocols assigned to your profile. If you are not the Primary Admin, you will need to ask them to review your access.

If you are the Admin and permissions are already correct, the register can possibly be hidden or minimized:

  1. Open the Window menu.
  2. Select Cascade.
  3. Look for the register in the list at the bottom of the Window menu.
  4. Select it to bring it to the front.

I'll keep an eye on this thread for any additional queries you may have.

What happens when you open the Chart of Accounts and double-click the checking account? That should open the register...
