Quickbooks Statement Writer problem opening file

I’m using Quickbooks Statement Writer 2020 with QB Premier 2020. I created an Income Statement and saved it to a Document File. It defaulted to a .qsm file and had no problems opening in Excel where I was able to save the Excel file also. Now, when I go to create my next Income Statement for the next month, I want to either Open the original .qsm file or Create A Copy from it. QSW asks me to choose my source file, allowing me to choose a qsm file only, and, once I’ve chosen the qsm file, it then tells me that QSW can only open .isw files. HELP!

Quickbooks Statement Writer problem opening file

Hello, Ashleyk33.

I’m here to help fix the challenges you’ve encountered upon opening your file in QuickBooks Desktop. To isolate this case, we can perform troubleshooting steps to fix the issue.

There are some reasons why this occurs, which may cause damage data, and we can fix this by performing the Verify data and Rebuild utility tools in QuickBooks Desktop. This way, it'll return to its default order and automatically fixes minor company record data issues.

If the program is in multi-user mode, you need to change to single-user mode (Go to File -> Switch to Single User Mode). It is very important that you have to create a backup copy of your company file before running Verify and Rebuild Data.

Verify Data:

  1. Press the File menu.
  2. Choose Utilities from the drop-down option.
  3. Select Verify Data
  4. Tap Ok to continue.

Note: If the verify process is successful, you are done. In case it fails due to some problem, QuickBooks will notify you to run Rebuild data.

Rebuild Data:

  1. Click the File tab at the top.
  2. Select Utilities from the drop-down option.
  3. Choose Rebuild Data
  4. Click Ok on Rebuild has completed.

Once verify/rebuilding data finished, we can close and reopen your file to revamp it. Or restart your computer to refresh your QuickBooks data.

Feel free to visit this article about fixing data damage: Fix data damage on your QuickBooks Desktop company file.

As always, you can contact our QuickBooks Support team if you need assistance with the steps. They'll be able to pull up your account in a secure environment and help you navigate using one of their tools.

That's it. Please let me know how it goes by clicking the Reply button. I'll be here to extend my hand with you if you need further assistance. Have a great day, and Take care!

Quickbooks Statement Writer problem opening file

I have run the Verify Data in the QB Desktop file. There are no problems found.

My problem, however, is not with QB. It's with Quickbooks Statement Writer. QSW is telling me I need to open an isw file, but is only allowing me to choose qsm files.

Please help!

I have run the Verify Data utility, and there are no problems found.

My problem, however, is not with QB Desktop. My problem is Quickbooks Statement Writer. It only allows me to choose qsm files when trying to Open Report or Copy From. Then, when I choose the existing qsm report, I'm told that QSW will only open isw files.

Please help!

Quickbooks Statement Writer problem opening file

Good day, @Ashleyk33.

I appreciate you performing the steps shared by my colleague to resolve the issue. Since there's no problem within the QuickBooks Desktop file, let's isolate your Statement Writer and fix it's performance issue.

First off, make sure that your QBDT is updated to the latest release so you always have the latest features and fixes. Once you’re done, download the latest version of QuickBooks Statement Writer. Just go to the Help Center and Update.

Then, update your regional settings in Windows and check this Microsoft article to make sure it’s compatible with your Excel.

Lastly, change the way you access the.QSM file by using a different company file. If the file opens, try some basic data damage troubleshooting on your company file and refresh the Statement Writer access permission. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Edit menu, then select Preferences.
  2. Select Integrated Applications and go to the Company Preferences tab.
  3. Click QuickBooks Statement Writer, then select Remove.
  4. Choose QuickBooks Statement Writer, then select Remove.
  5. Open the Statement Writer.

For detailed guidance, check the following article: Fix problems with Statement Writer

If the error persists, I’d recommend reaching out to the Technical Support Team. A specialist will be able to look up your account securely and further assist you via remote access.

Here are the steps to contact support:

  1. Click Help at the top menu and select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  2. In the Have a Question? window, enter a topic.
  3. Click Contact Us.
  4. Hit the Stat Messaging button.

Please take note our operating hours for chat support depends on the version of QuickBooks that you're using. Please see this article for more details: Support hours and types.
