We are a US company. Can we offer our Canadian customers the ACH payment option?

Hey there, meg-archer.

Thank you for joining the QuickBooks Community this afternoon. If you have a customer who's trying to pay you with a credit card that has an address located outside the United States, they may have a ZIP code (or Province code) that includes characters that doesn't meet the U.S. 5 digit standard. In most cases the international card holder is provided with information by the card issuing entity regarding how to process in the United States when they are presented with this situation.

For transactions that have problems due to such a zip code situation, your customer should contact the card issuing bank to determine if there are options for using their international card with U.S. based businesses that require a 5-digit numeric zip code. Intuit's payment processing doesn't utilize an alphanumeric zip code field. It's up to the credit card holder in conjunction with their credit card issuing bank, to provide credit card information that would be compatible in the U.S. for processing. If the International credit card cannot be used, another form of payment will be required.

I would recommend using the Electronic Fund Transfer. Here you can find the steps to record a bill payment by EFT.

  1. Select + New.
  2. Select Expenses, then Vendors.
  3. Select the vendor with the bill you'd like to pay, then select the bill.
  4. In the Action column, select Make payment.
  5. From the Bank/Credit account drop-down, select the bank.
  6. Uncheck Print Later.
  7. Enter a note in the Ref no. field to identify which payment it is.
  8. Fill in the Payment date and Amount.
  9. In the Outstanding Transactions section, select the bill or bills you're recording a payment for.
  10. Select Save and Close.

For further info on EFT payments, I recommend checking out this article: Record a bill payment by EFT.

If you have any other questions or concerns, feel free to post below at anytime. Thank you and have a nice evening.

They are not a vendor, they are a customer.  We are able to accept credit cards & I'm aware of the zip/postal code problem.  My question is regarding the ACH payment option for them.  Can a Canadian customer pay using the ACH bank transfer payment option?

Hello, meg-archer.

Paying the invoice using an International bank is currently unavailable in QuickBooks Online. As for now, our Merchant services accept only the US bank. Nothing to worry, I'll personally tap to our developers so they might consider adding this feature on any future updates.

In the meantime, you can visit our Blog site. This is where we share recent happenings and future developments, such as updates to newly added features. Here's the link: The QuickBooks Blog.

As a workaround, let your customers use other apps like PayPal or other apps that are supported in QBO. Go to this link: https://apps.intuit.com/app/apps/search?searchTerm=ach. In this link, you can see the approved apps that you can use in paying invoices through ACH.

For future reference on how to process an ACH bank transfer for your customer’s sales receipt or invoice in QuickBooks Online, please check this article: Process an ACH bank transfer from a customer

Please let me know if you have other concerns with ACH payments or questions about QuickBooks. I'll be around to help you out. Take good care and stay healthy!
