Why has date field disappeared on invoice line items?

Yes, I figured it out after a lot of trial and error.  Turned out that I was using "old" templates and every time I created a new invoice it defaulted to the old style template and the date column was missing.  Once I changed the default to the "new" or "modern" template, voila, the date column showed up.  I'm not real happy with the look of the new template, but that's for another day.  At least now I can get dates to show up... Why has date field disappeared on invoice line items?

I appreciate what you've done so far, @pno2nr. Let me share some information on how to get the date field in your invoice.

To begin with, please ensure to turn on the service date feature in the accounts and settings.

Here's how:

  1. Click the Gear icon, then select Accounts and Settings
  2. Navigate to Sales and then locate Sales form content
  3. Click the Pencil, then toggle the Service Date
  4. Once turned to green, click Done

After this, go to Custom Form Styles, then ensure that the date is included in the template.

Here's how:

  1. Go to Custom Form Styles, click New Style, and choose Invoice.
  2. You can select any template, then go to Content.
  3. Click the body, then toggle the Date.

Once done, you can now create an invoice with a service date or date field.

Additionally, you can check out this article to learn the new estimate and invoice layout: See what’s new with estimates and invoices in QuickBooks Online.

Why has date field disappeared on invoice line items?

Rogelio, I tried all the things you suggested, but the date column is still missing on all invoices, regardless of the template used.  Both for data entry and for printing.  I tried changing browsers from Firefox to Chrome and results were the same, no date field.  I'm stumped... any advice appreciated!  Thanks... Why has date field disappeared on invoice line items?

I can see that you did everything you could to show the missing service date, @pno2nr. I'm here to provide additional troubleshooting steps to help you get back to working order.

To start, may I know the QuickBooks Online (QBO) version you're using? Also, do you experience this when using a new invoice layout? I appreciate you providing additional details about this so I can further check what causes the issue.

In the meantime, you can perform these troubleshooting steps to see the service date column. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon and select Custom Form styles.
  2. Next, locate the invoice template you use and select Edit.
  3. Proceed to the Content tab.
  4. Then, select the table where the service date is located.
  5. In the lower left part of the page click the Show more activity options.
  6. From there, check the Collapse activity rows box.
  7. When finished, click Done.

Refresh the QBO page. Then, create an invoice again and check if you can now see the Service date in the line item.

On the other hand, you may want to switch to the old invoice layout if this happens when you're in the new one.

However, if the issue persists, I recommend reaching out to our phone support team to further investigate the issue. You can also request a screen-sharing session so they can check your setup.

Moreover, if you have a customer who you invoice regularly with the same product or services, you can easily make it a recurring transaction. For detailed instructions, read this article: Create recurring transactions in QuickBooks Online.

If you encounter trouble when accessing your other sales forms, please don't hesitate to leave a reply below. I'm always here in the Community to provide prompt assistance. Have a good one.

I was having the same issues as you @ypoulos. I finally discovered that you have to create a new default invoice. Seems the new Modern Invoice has been a headache of an update.

Ok, so open an invoice, click on manage with the gear on the top right, next to take tour, click on customization, make sure service date is green. I tried everything, and this is what actually worked for me!

Why has date field disappeared on invoice line items?

I have over a hundred customers. I use the same default template when emailing their monthly invoice. Do I need to follow your steps for every customer? For example, do I need to click on an invoice for each customer and make sure “service date” is green? Please tell me no, I beg you.

Why has date field disappeared on invoice line items?

I can imagine the hurdle you've been through when having hundreds of customers to email monthly, @NadRash.

I'll answer your query about the missing field on the invoice in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

Once the Service date field from the Customization settings is enabled when creating an invoice, it will automatically show up the next time you make an invoice. Therefore, you don't need to turn it on every time.

If the problem still occurs, I recommend contacting our QBO Customer Care Support Team so they can investigate this issue further and be able to guide you on the next steps for the possible resolution.

Here's how you can contact them:

  1. From the Search tab, click Contact Us.
  2. Enter your question and select Continue.
  3. Review and choose from the following: Have us call you or Chat with us.

For additional insights into customization, such as the options available, you can click this article: How to Customize Invoices, Estimates, and Sales Receipts.

Also, I've got this article to help you account for customers' payments moving forward: Record invoice payments in QuickBooks Online.

Why has date field disappeared on invoice line items?

The service date line is there, but it no longer auto fills from the linked bill date. That's completely useless. Has anyone figured out how to have the service date auto fill like it used to from the linked bill date?

Thanks for getting involved with this thread, businesscycle.

When using your auto-recall feature to pre-fill data on invoices/sales receipts, the only information that will be recalled is Location details.

I can certainly understand how an ability to have service dates auto-recalled on invoices could be useful and have submitted a suggestion about it as of today.

You can also submit your own feature requests while signed in.

Here's how:

  1. Use the Gear icon, then go to Feedback.
  2. Enter your suggestion(s) in the Have feedback? window.
  3. If necessary, attach a file with your Camera icon.
  4. Select Next.

Your feedback's definitely valuable to Intuit. It will be reviewed by our Product Development team and considered in future updates. You can stay up-to-date with the latest news about your product by reviewing Intuit's Product Updates webpage.

You also have the option of checking our QuickBooks App Store for apps which may be able to help you achieve what you're looking to accomplish.

As a workaround, if you wish to have a pre-filled sales transaction to use for a customer, you can set up a scheduled transaction, or create a recurring transaction template for transactions without a regularly scheduled interval.

If there's any additional questions, I'm just a post away. Have a lovely Wednesday!

Why has date field disappeared on invoice line items?

I'm having the same issue...it makes no sense that we have to manually enter the service date when it's already been entered in the original transaction!!

Please know your feedback on the changes made within the program is valid, bbarry.

I recognize the importance of having the service dates auto-recalled on invoices. Thus, I recommend submitting your feature requests to our Product Development team. They will review your request and might consider adding it to future updates.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon, then hit Feedback.
  2. Enter your suggestion(s) in the Have feedback? field.
  3. If necessary, attach a file with your Camera icon.
  4. Select Next.
