When I open a previously paid bill, all of the info is broken: the expense account is listed as the AP account, the amount is changed to negative, the ref number is completely gone, and there is no account listed where the expense account should be.
This has affected all bills from 11/22/2016 to some point in 2019.
I've tried rebuilding the file, but the rebuild crashes every single time with an unrecoverable error message and then aborts the QB app.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling QB.
I've tried clearing my registry using CCleaner.
I've tried updating the .NET framework
I've tried updating my computer.
I'm at my wits end, what do I do when there is so much data broken?
Which QB Desktop year version? Pro or Premier?
How big is you file size?
QB Desktop Pro 2020
The file size is 1.12GB
Try condensing your file to lower the size. You must have a data file with a maximum size of 200-300 MB to run on QBD Pro/Premier. Otherwise, consider upgrading your version to QBD Enterprise or purchase a 3rd party condense service..
The file limit is good to know, I had no idea. It would seem upgrading to Enterprise is the solution however, with the higher price tag of Enterprise, it would be great to know if upgrading to Enterprise would fix everything before purchasing.
It doesn't look like condensing the data will do anything. The recommended condense data option tells me the file size will be reduced by about 9% or 108MB.
I tried doing the other option for condensing and got an error message saying "condense discovered some errors in your company file, and will NOT condense your file at this time. The company file should be fixed, if possible, using 'File/Utilities/Rebuild Data' before trying to condense."
The company file won't rebuild, so condensing won't work.
You can install the trial version for QBD Enterprise to condense your file.
Another option, purchase a 3rd party service to convert your data to QB Online from certain date (e.g 1/1/2020) then convert it back to a QB Desktop file. You don't need to upgrade to QBD Enterprise but you will manage multi company files later.
Thanks for coming to the Community with your data concerns, @viro1994. I appreciate you for trying all the necessary troubleshooting steps to fix the issue.
Unrecoverable errors can occur in a variety of situations. I'd like to know what specific error code you received while rebuilding your data file.
In the meantime, we can open a sample company file. It will help us identify if the issue is within your company file or with QuickBooks itself.
Here's how:
Then, copy the company file to a different location. It can help us identify if the folder where the company file is saved is damaged.
Here's how:
If you receive the same error after moving the company file in a different location, the company file or your QuickBooks installation is probably damaged. I'd recommend running the QuickBooks Tools Hub, then run the Quick Fix my Program.
You can also check out this article for additional troubleshooting of Unrecoverable Error in QuickBooks Desktop.
If the issue persists, I'd suggest you talk to our Customer Care team so they can take a closer look at the problem and help you ix it.
I'm looking forward to hearing from you. I'll be here to help you more in resolving your data issues.
I downloaded the trial for enterprise and converted the file. I rebuilt the file in enterprise and the rebuild actually finished however, even though it says it fixed the error the same errors still occur.
The paid bills are all messed up like before, the balance sheet is out of balance. I can't even try to manually fix them because when I do it turns it from a paid bill that's messed up into an unpaid bill and that's going to cause an even greater headache. And those errors span several years of data.
I seem to have a backup from April that isn't damaged. I guess I will have to purchase enterprise for such a large file and recreate 4 months of work.
If you are located in the US, you can purchase a new subscription license for QBD Enterprise from a partner and get a renewal discount of up to 20% off every year.
Would a file recovery service be able to do anything? Could the file actually be recovered undamaged?
I opened my file from April and did a rebuild and it found errors that it fixed but couldn't fix "error at line 9715".
Let's the file has no hope, what are my options at that point? This company file is 9 years old, how would I just restart from scratch?
I moved all of my files from a different computer in April, but never noticed anything wrong with my files, the balance sheet was always in balance, until in July when I tried backing up and it said it needed to rebuild and then the errors I mentioned in my first post showed up and haven't gone away.

Chat Support and ask Data Service to fix your file. If you need to resolve it within days, you should consider to purchase a 3rd party service.
