Using Classes like Projects (as we do in Desktop).

Classes in QBO work just like Classes in desktop, except that you are limited to only 40 classes  in Plus. For unlimited Class tracking you need Advanced

I am trying to ask my question in a different way because I feel like I am not being understood.  I feel that QBO just does not have the capability to do what we need it to do and may have to go back to desktop or another cloud based accounting software that can handle our needs.

I haven't found that to be the case.  In Desktop we use classes like we would a project.  So we bill expenses to classes.  And we charge non-billable labor hours to classes through our timesheets.  Those expenses including labor show up on our Profit and Loss by Class reports.  When I used the weekly timesheet in QBO and selected the class for which the employee worked on, it did not show up in the Statement of Activity by Class.

Let me explain how it works, Japplebaum.

The employees will not show in the Statement of Activity by Class report since the assigned class if for customers or items.  Not unless you've used your employees in the expense transactions.

We have different reports in QuickBooks Online. You can learn how to run the reports by class to help you achieve your goals.

In Desktop, we used our Classes like Projects.

When we entered timesheets, we would charge our labor to various classes (projects).

Revenue received would get charged to various classes (projects).

We could run a P&L for each class...and also a budget for that class.

Can we do that in QBO the same way?  (Everyone seems to be telling me that Classes are used for Employee designations.  But our employees work on different projects so they cannot have just one 'class' assigned to them).

The classes used in the timesheets won't reflect the labor cost in the reports unless it's billable to customers. To learn more about the class tracking feature in QuickBooks, refer to this article: Turn on class tracking in QuickBooks Online.

Okay, can I do a 'work-around' by ticking the Billable box on the timesheets, but then just not Billing it?  The labor will still get expensed and tracked to my class, but I just won't ever Bill it.  Can that work?

Hi there, @japplebaum.

If you select the Billable box and not bill it to an invoice, it will stay on the unbilled time. 

You can also have the name of the customer/project in your timesheet without selecting the billable option.
