Why don't parent accounts show up when trying to set-up sub accounts

Thank you for posting here in the Community, @steverizzocpa.

Let me guide you how to make set up your sub-account under a parent account.

Just to clarify, are you trying to set up a sub-account in your Chart of Accounts? If so, let me guide you how to successfully set this up:

  1. On the left panel, hover your mouse on Accounting, and choose Chart of Accounts.
  2. Click on New.
  3. Choose the Account Type, Detail Type, and Name
  4. Tick on the Is sub-account box, and choose the parent account. Note that the parent account you choose is active.
  5. Click on Save and Close.

Feel free to read this article for more details: How to Create a New Parent Account or Sub-Account?

Please let me know if you're referring to something else or if you have any other concerns.

Why don't parent accounts show up when trying to set-up sub accounts

I am having the same problem!

I have added the account like you said in the Chart of Accounts but when I go to add another account and select the Is sub account section, the account I created does not show up as a parent option even when the account type and detail are the same.

Why don't parent accounts show up when trying to set-up sub accounts

Hello there, @Gracenurture.

Thank you for joining the Community. Allow me to help share some insights to set up sub-accounts in QuickBooks Online successfully.

To make sure I'm on the same page, may I know what account type and detail are you trying to set up? This way, I can check in my end if there's any reported issue similar to yours.

It's possible that this is a browser issue, which we can test for by setting up a sub-account in a private browser. These steps will vary based on which browser you're using.

  • Google Chrome: press Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: press Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Internet Explorer: press Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: press Command + Shift + N

If you got it to work, try clearing the temporary Internet files/cache in your regular browsers. Clearing them manually can solve problems with websites or browsers.  Since the private window wasn't using the information stored there, chances are there was some old data in the cache that was causing the problem.

For more information and detailed steps about unexpected browser behavior, please check this out: Troubleshoot unexpected browser behavior.

If you get the same results, please reach out to our phone support to further investigate this for you. They have the tools to determine what's causing the issue and help you get back to business in no time.

Here's how you can reach them:

  1. Sign in to your QuickBooks Online account.
  2. At the top right, click the Help icon.
  3. At the bottom, click Contact Us

These resources should help to get you on the right track. Keep me posted how it goes after trying these steps. Also, you're welcome to leave a comment if you have other questions about QBO. I'll be happy to help you out.

Why don't parent accounts show up when trying to set-up sub accounts

I had the same problem, which was corrected in an incognito browser (thank you); however, I'm using the desktop QBO app and the changes did not carry over.  Looks like this will be a significant issue with the desktop app, if it won't update while making list changes.

Why don't parent accounts show up when trying to set-up sub accounts

Good day, christine88.

I'm here to help you show the parent account so you can set up a sub-account via QuickBooks Online App.

Performance issues in QuickBooks Online App are resolved by doing basic troubleshooting steps. Let's start with resetting the app data to clear cache and refresh it into its default state.

Here's how:

  1. Click Help on the navigation bar at the top.
  2. Select Reset App Data.
  3. Allow a moment for the process to complete, and then close the app.
  4. Be sure to right-click the app and Run as Administrator when re-opening.

If you're still unable to set up a sub-account, let's try to uninstall then reinstall the QuickBooks Online Desktop App.

Uninstall the app:

Windows 10:

  1. Select the Start menu.
  2. Go to Settings, then select System.
  3. From the left pane, select Apps & features.
  4. Choose QuickBooks Windows app then select the Uninstall button.

Windows 8.1 and 7:

  1. Select the Start menu.
  2. Go to Control Panel then select Programs.
  3. Under Programs and Features, select Uninstall a program.
  4. Choose QuickBooks Windows app then select the Uninstall button.

Install the app:

  1. Double-click the file you downloaded to launch the installer.
  2. Select Next, then choose Agree & Install.
  3. Wait for the installer to run the rest of the way through.
  4. Select Finish.
