Happy Pride Month to all! Did you know that LGBT-owned businesses, while a small percentage of small businesses in the U.S., report almost three times the annual revenue of other small businesses? And the 1.4 million LGBT-owned businesses in the U.S. contribute $2.5 trillion in annual revenue to the economy, according to a National LGBT Chamber of Commerce report. Those are some stats to be proud of!
Just like when women support women-owned businesses, LGBT support is crucial to LGBT-owned businesses success. Here are some out and proud organizations supporting these entrepreneurs through training, funding, promotion and community.
Organization: StartOut
What they do: StartOut connects and educates LGBTQ entrepreneurs to empower great leaders and businesses. Their goal is create jobs and prosperity for LGBTQ individuals and for the local communities in which they do business, and to be recognized and respected for our contributions.
How they do it: Through offering mentorship, a funding portal, sponsoring meetups and awards, and providing The Networq, the “largest online directory of LGBTQ+ business owners to connect with one another.”
Organization: NGLCC (National LGBT Chamber of Commerce)
What they do: The NGLCC is the business voice of the LGBT community, the largest advocacy organization dedicated to expanding economic opportunities and advancements for LGBT people, and the exclusive certifying body for LGBT-owned businesses.
How they do it: Through organizing international conferences and summits, political advocacy, certification for LGBT majority-owned businesses, research and reports, and promotion of diverse and inclusive workplaces.
Organization: Golden Gate Business Association
What they do: We empower our small business entrepreneurs and professionals by creating opportunities for marketing, networking, procurement, and referral-based business growth. We also collaborate with other non-profits and engage with business and civic leaders to support policies that foster a more inclusive and welcoming business community.
How they do it: Through creating the oldest LGBT chamber of commerce in the U.S., organizing workshops and community events, and through political and community advocacy on behalf of the LGBT business community.
Organization: Castro Merchants Association in San Francisco, CA
What they do: Their mission is to unite Castro neighborhood merchants to promote the Castro's interests, increase opportunities and facilitate communication between businesses and local government.
How they do it: Through maintaining a directory of Castro-area merchants
Organization: LesbianBusinessCommunity.com
What they do: The LBC is a lesbian-owned and LGBT-friendly business directory and resource to their community’s businesses and those who want to support LGBT-owned and operated businesses.
How they do it: Through providing an online directory and connecting lesbian-owned and LGBT-friendly business owners with new customers.
Organization: U.S. Small Business Association LGBT Outreach Program
What they do: The LGBT inclusion and outreach team aims to bring focus on economic empowerment in the LGBT business community by providing access to the SBA's programs and services. Business owners can use their local assistance tool to find nearby offices and resources. There, you can get counseling on whether our 8(a) Business Development Program is right for you.
How they do it: Through forming strategic alliances with local LGBT chambers of commerce.
