QUESTION: Have You Ever Had a Public-Speaking SNAFU?

microphonecloseupheader.stocksy.jpg

I once spent months lining up a major sponsor for what would turn out to be the largest event I'd ever planned for my business. During the band's last set I hopped up to the mic to thank everyone for coming. After so long working behind the scenes, I was nervous to be in the spotlight - and guess who I forgot to thank during my big speech? My biggest sponsor, that's who. (Sorry, North Shore Realty Group!!)

Have you ever blown a public speaking opportunity? What happened, and do you chalk it up lack of preparation, over-preparation, or just plain nerves?

QUESTION: Have You Ever Had a Public-Speaking SNAFU?

I have no problem with public speaking, most likely cause I really don't care what people think.

But the first time I was being video taped, that dam red light on the camera made me freeze up. Before we started up again, can you say take two, a little black electricians tape over the light solved the issue.

{{{ awe gee, I used a bad word, that is why it is misspelled.  Yes that is really what the error said, "you used a bad word." }}}

Great story, @Rustler - it's so funny how the littlest things can trip us up. Smart about the electrician's tape!

p.s. I've got a penchant for blue language myself, but I've never tested it out on this platform. Darn good to know :smileywink:

QUESTION: Have You Ever Had a Public-Speaking SNAFU?

Public speaking can be difficult when it is your first time. And 100th time. I don't think it gets any easier, but it ought to get better at preparing. I like the SHEEP analogy. QUESTION: Have You Ever Had a Public-Speaking SNAFU?

Oooh, I like that @SteveChase! I might even go with SHEEPS (adding an S for "slooooow down"). When I get nervous I have a tendency to talk too fast.

QUESTION: Have You Ever Had a Public-Speaking SNAFU?

Hi,

One of the biggest fear that people have is of speaking in public. It takes quite a bit of exposure to get used to it. I still freeze up. But preparing what you want to say and putting it on a piece of paper for referring to in case you forget what to say next does help.

QUESTION: Have You Ever Had a Public-Speaking SNAFU?

I love the honesty of this conversation @EmilyCowan @Sangeethmathew @SteveChase @Rustler! I think adding a final "S" to Steve's SHEEP strategy is really important. I admire people who control the pace of what they're saying, whether they're giving a professional speech or just sharing a story at a dinner party. I think of it as the Power of the Pause -- and, as a bit of a fast-talker myself, it's something I need to work on. I guess being aware of the challenge is the first step to overcoming it! Anyone else have tips or stories to share about public speaking snafus or successes -- @OutlawSoaps @Jennie @NYZcoach @DBeverley?
