Join nowHi there, I have a few tax questions reguarding the salon. I recently just opened in mid October last year 2017. Im not sure on all deductions, one question I have is can I deduct beauty expenses on myself? It is apart of my professional appearance. Any ideas?
ie: hair products, skin care?
Hi @thejsinclair - welcome to QB Community!
You bring up a really fascinating question. There's certainly an argument to be made that as the owner of a beauty salon you are your own best advertisement and (as you well know), looking fabulous requires a significant investment of time and money. But if you're planning on making that argument to the IRS it's probably best to consult a qualified tax specialist in your area.
Where is your salon located?
Easy answer is no.
The only aspects of dress/appearance that is a business expense are ***required*** for the job. Further defined as something not normally worn. ie, steel toed boots, uniforms, hard hat, etc
however, clothing, etc that can normally be worn out side the work place is not a business expense, like suits, dresses, etc.

Technically, no. That's called "conversion" as you are converting non-deductible personal expenses into deductible business expenses.
However, if you are using products that you purchased for the salon, no one will know except you. so.. shhhh!
