Quickbooks (Online) doesn't seem to function properly. I want to manually add custom rates. By all notes and search options (if you search "add agencies", Quickbooks shows you how to do this. However, for reasons I cannot determine, adding an agency per the instructions PROVIDED BY QUICKBOOKS is not possible.
This is why I need to use custom rates. There are cities in Colorado that have State or County only sales tax. And there are cities that have multiple counties in them. For example, Boulder (3.86%) is a city and it is also a COUNTY (1.185%). The city rate is different from the county rate. Longmont (3.53%) is a CITY and is located in Boulder COUNTY (1.185%). The ONLY agency showing in Quickbooks is City of Boulder. If I have a client in Boulder County, but NOT Boulder, my only AGENCY option is Boulder City in Boulder County, which of course, will give me an inaccurate tax amount.
Thanks for laying out the details of your concern, @reflectionsigns.
I'll provide information about adding your agencies for your taxes in QuickBooks Online (QBO).
As of now, not all counties are supported in QBO. That is why you can only see Boulder City when adding the tax agency.
In the meantime, you can continue using the custom sales tax rates and ensure you enter the correct tax rate of Boulder County. I'd be glad to show you how:
I'll add this article for further reference in setting up, editing, and deactivating your sales tax rate and settings: Set up your sales tax in QuickBooks Online.
Also, this handy resource can give you information on applying the sales tax rates to specific transactions: Apply sales tax rates to transactions and sales forms in QuickBooks Online.

Carneil_C this doesn't work. There is no "AGENCY" to select. Boulder County doesn't exist as an agency and QBO won't allow me to create one , so it can't be "chosen" in #5. Also, not sure what "isn't supported" means. Doesn't address the question. I need to add an agency and Quickbooks won't allow me to add ANY agencies even though there is a radio button. Why give the choice to add an agency, then not allow the user to ADD AN AGENCY?!?!
Adding Boulder County as an agency is essential to calculate sales tax correctly, reflectionsigns. I'm here to share additional info about this.
The option to add Boulder County as an agency is unavailable in QuickBooks Online. In the meantime, I recommend selecting the Colorado Boulder City or the Colorado States when creating an agency.
Here's how:
When creating an invoice, ensure the client address is entered correctly (Boulder County). Then, the program will provide the calculated amount. You can view this by clicking See the math. For visual reference, I've added a screenshot below:
Rest assured that the Product Development Team is constantly enhancing the program. They continue introducing new features, interfaces, or other improvements to cater to the users' business needs.
I also encourage sharing your request about adding Boulder Country as an agency. You can follow the steps on how to submit it:
Additionally, you can run the Sales Tax Liability report to view the taxes you owe and determine why you owe them. I'll also help you ensure everything is accurate before filing and paying your sales tax return.
I'm always ready to help if you have other questions about creating tax rates and adding them to your transactions. You can reply to this thread or start a new one to let me know.
The problem with this solution is that the report for filing sales tax will erroneously show that I need to pay x dollars to BOULDER when the tax is actually for LONGMONT, Boulder COUNTY. One is paid directly to the state and the other is paid when filing a city return. The tells me that Quickbooks doesn't have a clue how sales taxes are remitted in Colorado.
