Can someone help get the sales tax rate to the correct rate. I change it, but it doesn't allow me to save it, and reverts back to what I don't want it to be?

I had not posted the books for three months.  Got caught up to do the sales tax, and the appearance on the invoices has changed.  It is charging the sales tax rate sometimes only the city, sometimes on the state and sometimes both.  I got to edit it and am able to do that but it won't let me save it and reverts back.

I understand the importance of calculating sales tax correctly in QuickBooks Online, GrannyS66. Proper tax management is not only essential for compliance but also crucial for maintaining precise financial records and avoiding potential audits. With this in mind, I'd be more than happy to guide you through the process of saving your newly edited sales tax rate. This will help ensure that all future transactions in your QuickBooks Online account apply the correct tax calculations, keeping your business finances in order and aligned with current tax requirements.

In QuickBooks, the sales tax rate is calculated based on where you sell and where you ship the product or service. This includes state rates plus any applicable local rates. Some states require sellers to charge tax based on the business location, even when selling or shipping to a different address within the state.

When you create an invoice or sales receipt in QuickBooks Online, the system automatically calculates the total sales tax at the bottom. You can view a detailed breakdown of the sales tax calculation by selecting See the math on the invoice or receipt.

If you observe that something is off with the calculated sales tax, you can edit it by following the steps below:

  1. Click the See the math on the invoice.

  2. Hit Override this amount.
  3. Enter the Rate and Amount and choose a reason for the override.
  4. Once done, make sure to click Apply override button before hitting Close.

If the sales tax rate will revert to its original amount, I suggest using a private window, which doesn't store temporary files. Sometimes, QuickBooks can have browser issues due to poor configuration. Browsers use cache and cookies to load web pages faster on subsequent visits, but this can occasionally result in unexpected behavior that impacts the views and performance of QuickBooks Online (QBO). To open an incognito window, you can use the following keyboard shortcuts:

  • Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Edge: Press Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Google Chrome: Press Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Safari: Press Command + Shift + N

If you continue to experience the same result, I suggest utilizing other supported browsers. This will help us identify if the issue is specific to your current browser.

If the option appears, you can go back to a regular browser and ensure to clear its cache. A piled cache can also be the reason for some unexpected page behavior.
