I was able to find Fiat Lux online (for others who want to know: https://www.fiatlux.co.id/quickbooks).
Their site looks rather simple, and based on their domain country code (.id), they're based in Indonesia. Do you know who or what is Fiat Lux?
So - YAY! - I finally got the workaround to actually work. I *think* they have been tinkering behind the scenes to make this harder.
I had to install and uninstall and reinstall QB24 FOUR times and each time it would not load as an exe file. The fifth time it let me double click to complete the install to an exe file.
Do the steps listed above but if you still cannot import, you will have to have your QB2020 or 2021 version OPEN so TT can find your file. That is different from how it worked for other people. Once I opened my quickbooks and gave it permission to access it, it worked.

Level 15 is the highest level you can get in the community. They can be trusted even if they are not located in the US. You can easily find scammers in the community and some are in the US. Lol
My grandmother had a Filco refrigerator in her basement that she purchased in 1946. When she passed away in 2017 that refrigerator was still operating. Since 1946, innovations have improved energy efficiency, refrigerator capacity, and numerous other features we enjoy, but those innovations have all come at the cost of product quality. That old fridge continued to keep frozen food frozen, and cold foods cold for over 71 years. We sold it. I expect that it is still operating today.
I suspect that, these days, companies fear their product living too long a lifespan. Compare Coca Cola to Filco. Coke makes a product that you can buy today, and then buy again tomorrow, the next day, and so on. Filco made a product that you only had to buy once a century or so. At some point, people figured out the double bonus effect of making lower quality products. First, they get the benefit of lower upfront costs per unit, since the lower quality product is made from cheaper parts. And second, the lower quality parts act as timebombs, shortening the product lifespan, and increasing the frequency of which consumers will have to return to the market for an "updated" product.
QuickBooks doesn't have to worry so much about the quality aspect; the products they sold us function the way we wanted them to. I mean, who among us here REALLY NEEDS a different, updated accounting software product to meet our needs? I would argue, very few, if any of us. Our desktop software does everything we need it to do. And, because of the nature of business administration, our accounting needs aren’t going to change anytime soon. So, This software, in and of itself, could serve us for the next twenty years, or for the foreseeable future, without needing much in the way of updates. That means there is no intrinsic timebomb in the quality of the product. Instead, Intuit believes it necessary to IMPOSE an ARTIFICIAL TIMEBOMB in the product in order to stimulate a continual flow of repeat purchasers. They’ve experimented with the customer base, trying to find that sweet spot where the customers would bear the cost of the upgrade without rebelling against the company. Three years seemed to work for a while. Then, they saw Microsoft taking its Office products and switching them over to a Software As Service (SAS) subscription based model, pumping money in on a regular basis rather than every so many years. Honestly, I was fine with Microsoft Word 2007 (because it was the first to save files in .pdf format). Adobe jumped on board. SAS became all the rage. Now, Intuit says, “We want some of that.”
Meanwhile, Intuit’s customer base already has QuickBooks products that serve the customer’s needs. We don’t need anything more, we don’t need anything new. We don’t need upgrades, bells, whistles, or BS. When a new version of TurboTax comes out, we just need it to have the capacity to do what it’s been doing for the past several years. Why not just continue to support the QuickBooks you already sold me, and I, as a loyal customer, will continue to purchase your updated TurboTax? I can understand TurboTax needing to be new each year. That makes sense. The federal government changes the tax laws every year, so the tax software must change. No problem here. You can have my money on that every year happily and without complaint. But my accounting software doesn’t need anywhere near that kind of attention.
Intuit is turning QuickBooks into a hamster wheel, and turning its customers into hamsters. That’s not a healthy relationship. They still have the opportunity to do better. Will they take that opportunity, or will they run the company on hamster power?
It now says in the import section "now compatible with QuickBooks 2021 through 2024", but I have QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2021 and it does not work. FYI I did check to make sure I'm in single user mode.

You just need to install the trial version of QB Desktop 2024 but you don't need to run or upgrade your file on it.
Thank you! I had the same issue with QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2021 installed on my computer. I spent a few hours on the phone with TurboTax support and they were not able to solve the issue only to have them ask me if I would consider transferring my QuickBooks data manually. I responded politely, "No, that is not why I have QuickBooks and use TurboTax". I spent a few more hours installing some Windows 10 Pro updates to make sure that wasn't the issue and even uninstalled TurboTax and reinstalled it without success. Before calling TurboTax support again I found this suggestion. I installed QB Enterprise 2024 trial version with the link, I didn't open it at all, I opened my company file in QB 2021 and then started the TurboTax import.
When I installed TurboTax this year I changed the default install location to be Program Files x86 because that is where all the previous versions of TurboTax are installed (which was the default location at one point) and also all of my QuickBooks versions (2018 and 2021). But, TurboTax installed to Program Files instead. I repeated it just to make sure I didn't do it wrong. Wonder if TurboTax is looking to find QuickBooks in Program Files and not looking in Program Files x86. A simple fix for TurboTax would be to give the option to point to your QuickBooks install and the company file when it fails to find it. But it seems their goal is to force everyone to use the QuickBooks subscription plan!!

YES every year before in turbo tax it allowed us to pick the file.
You need to fix this TURBOTAX.

I followed all the instructions and it did not work. I called Customer Support with TurboTax and QuickBooks, unfortunately, TT referred me to QB and QB referred me to TT. It appears to me it is a TT problem if the TT software cannot find the location of the QB files. However, it appears that no on at Intuit (Turbo Tax nor QuickBooks) is "Intuitive" enough to find a solution for the problem. March 15th is not far away, and we all have to get our taxes done. I sent an email on February 26 to [email address removed]. Please look at the information I provided for my specific situation and respond to my email with a solution.
I contacted QB sales, and they said they don't offer a free version. This is beyond ridiculous. INTUIT FIX THE PROBLEM AND HAVE TURBO TAX ALLOW US TO BROWSE TO OUR COMPANY FILE!!!
Danm. I feel pissed off having wasted 30 minutes of my life reading through this crap just hoping that TT and QB happened to find each other working in the same building and fixed the problem. But, nope. I'll be requesting a full refund for my purchase of TT AND QB, since they don't provide the functionality described in their packaging. What a wonderful moment in the lifecycle of a software company.

My experience has been quite similar to that of others.
But after 10 hours on the phone with CS over the span of four days, I don't think it's a 'bug' as many here believe. It seems to me to be more of a 'feature'.
My issue here is that TTB23 specifically states:
"Improved Features:
o - Now compatible with Quickbooks 2021 through 2024. (No new purchase required)"
Feature - yes. Improved - no.
Since TTB23 is designed to not do what it claims to do, I thought it was proper for Intuit to refund my purchase price. So during one of my phone conversations with CS, I asked if this was possible. We all know what the answer was.
I, too, am leaving TT.

As the individual who launched this entire thread with a question about troubleshooting the compatibility of QuickBooks 2021 and TurboTax, I would welcome hearing from others about any desktop (i.e. purchase, not subscription model) solution. I have yet to find one. Given that Quickbooks and TurboTax are both made by Intuit, the end game seems pretty clear. Online solution is $1,200/year vs. one-time purchase of ~$350-400.

Desktop programs with non-subscription licenses are no longer profitable for developers. You can still find ERP programs with perpetual licenses. Your best option is to keep using QBD 2021 and use the trial version of any supported QBD version to export data to TurboTax. I'm sure they'll keep QB Desktop Enterprise around to support QBO users exporting data to TurboTax until they find a breakthrough solution.

Additionally, I'd even be ok with buying a new desktop license every 5 years or so; Basic accounting functionality may not change, but usability could/might improve. However, I don't subscribe (pun intended) to the new paradigm Intuit is attempting to enforce/impose.
I have the same issues that you are having. I believe that we are being forced to do all of our business accounting in "the cloud", including the trial version of QB that others on here have been pushing. Because of security and privacy issues, I refuse. I am looking into other software but haven't found anything yet that seems adequate.
It's quite obvious that Intuit is forcing everyone to join their subscription platform so they can squander more money from small businesses to help their bottom line. Companies like mine can't afford it. Intuit is evil. Time for a change.
This workaround worked for me as of March 4, 2024.
I use Quickbooks Desktop Pro 2021.
I installed QuickBooksEnterprise24Trial.exe.
I rebooted after install.
I started TurboTax and it found my Quickbooks Desktop Pro 2021 file immediately.
You do not need to open or upgrade to QB Enterprise after reboot.
As the person who started this entire thread, I have an update after speaking with QuickBooks sales. Desktop versions that you could buy for a one-time payment are no longer available (even though you can find them listed and available for download on the Quickbooks site. You will also note that Intuit has pulled the product from Amazon, Walmart, Sam's, Costo, and other online retailers.) I was told in no uncertain terms that all users will have to migrate to the annual fee structure of the online version if they wish to stay current. I think many of us don't see that as good value for the money. Given the substantial annual fees Intuit is charging for the online version, it feels more like a money grab.
I agree wholeheartedly. My business is very simple. I moved to my quicken product and plan to leave TurboTax next year too since it cannot import except from QB.
